Ozzie - cool that you pulled it off despite setbacks. Really solid custom with great pats choices. So what’s the rest of the story? Did parts arrive after all, or did you have to completely change directions? Sometimes a tight spot drives new creativity you don’t expect. I’d love to know what happened.
So...I actually have a slew of WIPs sitting around, most at 90% part ready, with an easier hop/skip/jump to get to 100%. I was between this one and a Granny Demon this time around. I now have parts to finish off my RS Muton and OG Sgt. Misha, as well as a Secto-Viper kit; we’ll see what I do next, although I think I’ll most likely finish my RS Muton.

Ah, thanks my man (and to others who commented)! Yeah, so I had to pivot—my pieces actually just came in yesterday (obviously too late). Deciding on CB SE, I had to be patient painting the layers of white, but otherwise, it was not a difficult paint job. Hardest part was keeping the figure clean—not easy, when you need to fit a painted jacket over a white torso!

And that brings me to my questions for the rest of you:
Ax - I was unaware of this version of Budo until seeing your custom. Great parts choices! The chain mail shoulders and the colors all make him pop! The bright 90's look isn't usually at the top of my list, but I really like this look for Budo. He came out great. You are amassing an awesome collection of Ninjas and martial arts experts and it would be cool to see them all together some day. Is there anything in the making of this one that was particularly enjoyable or surprising or challenging for you? I know how it feels to wish that a figure's head were cast in flesh for easier fixes. Does that head really fit in the helmet or did you have to modify it? The washes on the blue armor look cool, and the HACKS spikes add a nice touch. Lots of color and texture variety throughout. Can we have the recipe? You have definitely brought a lot of fun ideas to the Tank lately, and I'm sure we can count on you for more goodness in the future. Zparticuz - my man, you brought a great version of Doc to the contest. Love the shot with Lifeline in the background on one side and the stretcher on the other. You paid nice attention to all his accessories, and it paid off. Always a fan of your work whether it’s “easy” for you or not, and I'm glad you joined in on the contest. What head is that? I don't recognize it, Dime Store Novel Legends? You painted him well man, and he turned out great. I like the older wiser look for Doc. Todd - Shockwave has always been such a cool character, and your NF version is uber cool. Unlike many other NF he really does look subdued enough to blend in at night while still looking visually interesting. Your paint applications give him a lot of subtle detail while staying true to the original character. Well played. So I’m curious, early on you asked whether this contest had to be a GI Joe character -were you thinking of a certain recent custom of your with a famous (bad) attitude? I’m glad you decided to feature your work in the contest as well. You’ve been hitting a lot of them out of the park lately. |

Thank you for vote of confidence first of all and the push to join the contest, I had fun makin Doc. I bought the Kieth David inspired noggin from Gigabread but not knowing how/ who to use it for but then the idea hit me that he would be a great Resolute Doc when I was brainstorming for the contest.

So, this started out as me wanting to do a new version of Budo that could be a Ninja Force version, but did intend to use the international version’s color palet. As I put the parts together, it ended up being a more straight forward version. I may do the same build in traditional colors. Helmet fit without modification, though the head perpetually looks down. The only thing particular different is I put a matte topcoat in the teal parts as the paint itself was rather glossy. I don’t typically do top coats.
