I'm looking to buy a vice clamp at lowest cost to break Joe torsos.
Since breakin' up for frankenjoes will be its ONLY function, how small of a vice can I get away with? 2.5"? There are a lot of small hoppy vice clamps out there, but I worry they might not be strong enough So what do YOU use? |

I just picked up this today to do customs while visiting family. Cracked open a Retaliation Snake Eyes today. Actually works better than my bigger vise at home and not bad for $8.

You can also use a vice grip wrench. You just have to get the wrench opening settings right. It's probably the same cost as a traditional vice, but it's a hell of a lot more portable. Make sure you put the figure in a sock when using this method. The sock will keep the pieces from being lost.

I've had a lot of luck lately with a different method. Score the seam of the torso with exacto. Then, take a very small flat head screwdriver and gently tap it into the seam with a hammer. Do this on each side, and you should be able to pull it apart with minimal damage.
The screwdrivers I use are those small electronic/eyeglass repair kinds. |

There is also another way to crack them open. I did this in a MU figures some months ago. I have all my tools in the attic. As mostly I wanted the arms only tried to do it at home. Put some water on it is possible ensuring some will go inside the torso. Place it in the fridge for 30min to 1h. Then place a small spoon between the two torsos (upper and bottom) and apply some force if you see a gap to place a screw driver in the upper torso junction hole do it also. It cracked up rather easily. As we are talking about plastics at room temperature there is always a stretching effect when you apply force, same goes for the glue. When they are frozen the stretching effect is gone so it should crack open more easily.
By the way another tip in case you damage a part, bend too much or simply some plastic damage from a plier or screw driver. Simply boil some hot water, and place the part inside one of those tea nets or something, just make sure the part doesn't touch the bottom of the pot. Leave it cooking for 5 minutes or so and check. Place it back if necessary. I fixed some parts with this method. It's basically the same effect of the soft plastic but because its hard plastic you need to reach higher temperatures and leave it on for more time. PS: This worked well on GI Joe parts not sure about other toy line. I used this method on a Jada Robocop and the parts actually shrunk quite a lot

I tried this for the first time yesterday and it worked great. I've taken apart 10 figures now and I wish I had tried it earlier. I ended up with some minor stress marks on a few but paint will cover that.
