Hey all,
I'm new to the hisstank group, just resumed collecting joes a couple of years ago. I apologize if this post is in the wrong forum. I've really enjoyed swapping and modifying parts of my joes to come up with new looking characters. I've even used the dremel with some success. While I've purchased some acrylic paints, I've so far abstained for fear of ruining a really nice piece of plastic with a crappy paint job. Anyway, my dilemma is about joe con this year. I've made the logistical arrangements to get off work and go, but the theme and reveals so far have made me hesitate (I graduated from collecting the 1st time around before TF came out). The one thing that has made me reconsider is the customizing class, assuming I sign up before it fills. Is it worthwhile for someone with rudimentary customizing skills, or are most of the techniques presented and discussed more advanced? Can anyone who attended last year give some feedback? I appreciate any input. |

As the guy who'll be teaching the class, I can say that you'll be fine. Even with a very basic skillset, you'll have no problems putting together the figure we'll be building this year. The class covers all ranges of abilities, and you will not find a better pool of people to discuss techniques with.

Thank you for replying so quickly. Is there a portion of the class devoted to painting techniques? I guess I'd better be on top of things when registration opens so that I can get a seat. Thanks again.

Thanks for the insight hardcorps. Come to think of it I do have a good amount of fodder I could begin to practice painting on. I'll have to check into that casting thing. I bought like $50 worth of casts last summer from some dude (tofu jesse?, still haven't seen them and the guy won't answer my emails. Sounds like DIY is the way to go..

I desperately wanted to go to this last year. One of these years I'm going to be able to go. Somehow in my head I imagine this as the best part of the entire con. I've only made one painted custom figure so far but it was so awesome that it has made me really want to do more.

Well, as someone who personally doesn't really pick up anything new in terms of techniques and whatnot at the classes, I still take them. As a serious customizer, there is no better place to surround yourself with like minded people who are going to have answers to just about any question you could ask as well as have the time to show you what you need to know.

So from what I can glean from other posts, the customizing class sells out pretty quick? Well, I thought I'd be coming to joecon, but if I can't get a spot in the class I just don't think I can justify the expense and time away from the fam. I can only get online with my credit card hand so many times during the day, I guess we'll just have to rely on lucky timing to get a spot. Good luck to me I suppose?
Alyosha; Now that I think about it, I think I bought some casts from you at the DFW show last fall. I've been too busy to do much with them, but once I get some hands-on instruction maybe I'll feel up to it. After seeing some of your stuff at that show, I'd be pretty stoked to learn some tricks of the trade from you. Hopefully I'll get to see your handiwork again in Springfield! |
