I purchased a huge lot of vehicles on CL and I am slowly working through what I have. Some of the vehicles are complete or near complete. There are a few that have a broken piece or two that I was thinking about repairing with styrene or something similar. The dilemma I have is whether to paint the repair part or slap a coat on the whole thing. Example is a complete S.L.A.M. with two broken missile tabs. I believe I can fix the tabs with some sheet styrene and am thinking about giving the whole top a spray. Or a Conquest X30, some parts are faded and some are not. Spray the entire thing to match?
Thanks, Tom

You aren't talking about anything rare or pricey. These are also items that are broken or faded. If painting it makes it look better, which it most likely will, go for it. People have customized much more than that in the past.
Heck, I restored a Defiant that was badly discolored by painting it to look original. It looks great and you can't tell it was painted unless you look really close. |

... And that's how you get into building customs.

paint it! even if it was a badly discolored FLAGG I'd say..why not if you are semi-skilled.
I'm assuming a great many vehicles will start crumbling within 20 more years anyway as the plastic leeches even more moisture..a coat of paint could help it last longer theoretically!

Thanks, Tom As for the Conquest. If it's not busted and so bad it needs a paint job I'd do a custom one and just find a better original one. |

I say paint it. Unless you have something in perfect condition with a high value. That doesnt seem to be the case.

Green SLAMS are everywhere, if you are going to respray it anyway might as well do a variant like a desert sage, arctic or night force.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The slam will get painted and so will the conquest (I do have one already 100% complete). This will be my first step into customizing.

I have found white really easy to pull off, so is tan. I find flat or semi gloss work better on toy plastics and look more realistic when done. But for example my white arctic Retaliation Hiss is the only custom vehicle out of a couple of dozen I have done that my wife has ever complimented... and I am not a master customizer like Bloodbrigade.
Just go slow, spray even like you are a robot. do light coats rather than heavy and make up the difference by doing multiple coats with plenty of time to dry in between. If you do an arctic SLAM I am pretty sure it would be the first one on here I bave seen so it will be very interesting. If you want to go first rate a set of cobrastickers original slam stickers could make it super authentic once it is sprayed, but what I usually do is just use leftover stickers from other projects and get entire sheets of Joe and Cobra emblems from ebay or somewhere but I do a lot of custom vehicles. May the force be with you and good luck!
