I guess it depends on your budget. Hobby stores will have a lot of what you need but it will be expensive. You cant go wrong with a good wooden base board, and for things like shrubs and trees try looking at aquarium plants, some make pretty good bushes/shrubs and are cheap. People also like to use Styrofoam and papermachee for hills and rocks. An important thing about building your own dio is to be resourcefull and creative in your materials, its also a huge part of the fun IMO.

Any type of styrofoam will work, but if your dio is going to be big and bulky, it would be best to use a wood base. Otherwise the whole thing may break in half under it's own weight when you pick it up.

Look for a store that sells model train stuff, a lot of that stuff can be used for diorama building. Also, if you have any big buildings being built by you, check with them see if they have any foam insulation they're throwing away. It's usually a pink or blue color. Check Zoomie's Flagg thread, that's what he's using, you can just buy it at your local hardware store, but if you're lucky, you can also find it for free, lol

Yes, yes, and YES! Buy a paint mask and do it in a well-ventilated area. This stuff is fairly dangerous when burning with a hit knife and I'm sure it wouldn't good for your lungs in vapor form (which turns into a solid again after it enters your lungs and cools).

best way to make terrain and hills and give your diorama a actual life like apperance is first find a good base you want to work with. I have used foamcore board becaus eit is light and you can cut it to any shape you want. then if you really want to make it look real and detailed, use chicken wire and shape the ground and hills or whatever you want to . Say if you want a river than build a ravine with the base of the river being the bottom of the foam board. After you get the chicken wire formed i found if you first use regular paper mache with strips of newspaper to cover the wire works best. Make sure it dries and keep adding layers to it. Then if you want find some plaster sheets and cover the paper mache to make it more hard and strurdy. then i suggest using spray paint. Then you can start adding trees, brush, moss, rocks, sand and anything you really want. The thing is when making a landscape you can use your imagination and with the paper mache and plaster idea it really looks like rocks or dirt just by the way the paper mache looks and drys.

Actually, what I find works better than the chicken wire method are the metal air conditioner filters such as this
They peel apart into 3 or 4 layers. They are highly moldable and they have a really fine mesh which holds the model train dirt really well. |
