hmmm no updates....
I think Zoomie has decided to change gears and convert his entire house to an accurate scale- model USS Flag. I mean it's the only way to really do a 60-foot model justice, right? Plus he's an engineer so I would not be surprised to see little jet engines popped into all the planes... Perhaps he also commissioned Tri-Gate to do a sculpt for him of a female sailor, which he plans to have cast in the hundreds to crew this massive beast. Either this or he;s done something TRULY crazy |

the elevator will double as the floor of a hangar and will lower into sub-levels so far i have planned 4 levels including the sub ground floor...and if you include the surface/top floor it's 5 total...which makes 3 intermediate levels and a top and bottom. as far as specifics of what i want it to support a BMF at least 2 of the target x wings fao imperial shuttle craft at least 2 night ravens (vintage) at least 2 turbo tanks at least 2 at tes 4 rattlers 2 x-19s 4 F-22s 8 hiss tanks rolling thunder 2 tomahawks but basically i want it to support at least any one "toy" i have without my fear of it collapsing under the weight and destroying hours of work and whatever was on and/or underneath. originally i was/am considering a sproket/chain method of lifting/lowering but when i saw your method being that it's much simpler to construct and thus easier to "hide" i was intrigued by it to say the least...i even had the wife look at the pictures...however her reply (after a few explicatives said "wow thats nice"...dont read anything into that though she says that about everything of mine too ) However i know i am limited on options of operation because i refuse to do a "suspension" style rig as it would detract from the structure (the hangar) and would therefor not be hidden (the sub levels are supposed to be secret) anyway that was in answer to your quesion and i can't wait to see what new direction you're taking this project in |

Wow...I finally reached the end, 88 pages. I just joined a couple of days ago and I am really stoked to see a project of this scale on here. Hats off to you Zoomie, this is a fantastic piece of work you've set forth on! I'll be tuning in to see the ultimate conclusion!

Okay. Hopefully, this decision will not be met with an inordinate amount of angst. I came to this decision very deliberately and I hope it's for the best. First, let me explain to you my thought process.
I have been working on this project for over a year and have been through some ups and downs. There were some problems I solved. And others I never did. The elevator was a huge win and one that I took great satisfaction in resolving. But there were other problems I was never going to get around. There were two main problems I never felt I would solve: 1) This aircraft carrier, while light in construction materials, paid the price with extremely delicate connections. I would routinely pop portions of the carrier apart just moving it around the room. This went from minor annoyance to serious concern when I started to consider the effect this would have on transportation of this leviathan. It is meant to be moved from place to place and stored for periods of time. If I wasn't moving it, the foam might be fine, but if I pop connections when I move it three feet, I cringe to think what might happen with longer distances. 2) Paint apps would continually be a problem. While real ships need regular maintenance with paint to keep from rusting, I don't want to have to keep up regular maintenance on a stationary display. What I mean is: the paint would never really adhere to the foam and would strip away when I remove aircraft from the decks. I tried several solutions and none of them provided me with a solid solution to the problem. I would have to constantly be repainting when I removed an aircraft from the deck, since the wheels would tear the paint away from the foam it had never really adhered to properly. Well, this brings me to my solution. These two problems, while they might seems somewhat ancillary to the project, were vital and sort of dealbreakers for me. So, I did what any captain would do to a sinking ship... I scuddled it... in a way. Now, don't panic, the project isn't coming to an incomplete end. It's just changing materials. Viola! Behold the beginnings of the new and improved Aircraft Carrier! Now, I didn't really scuddle the ship. The old design has huge value as far as layout and design, but I decided the time has come to build this thing out of something that will last. Wood became the only solution. I'm actually happy with the change. And I have decided to make a few changes. I'm adding a few more feet to the carrier. Which might make it top out and somewhere near 22 feet! Now, I'll be able to work faster (with no glue to dry) and I'll be able to build smarter (making it much more structurally sound). I'm happy with the final decision. I know some of you may be annoyed that I'm rebooting the project, but this will definitely be better in the long run. I'll try to work quickly to get past all the boring parts that don't need rehashing. We'll see what happens now.

Very nice, and a good choice on the wood.
I have three incomplete bases I have been working on made from craft wood. All very solid and painted nicely just need a good cabinet to display them on/in and I will pop them on here. My next project will be a ship but more along the lines of the Landing Craft from the 1986/1987 intro to the Cartoon. Able to hold two mauler sized vehicles as well as have a landing pad on the aft deck sizable enough for at least one Skyhawk. And I will use wood for it as well. All in all I think its the best unless you can cast your own parts in solid plastics. Best of luck and looking foward to more updates.

Zoomie, I agree that the switch to wood is better in the long run. I've been seeing the updates on the carrier, and best of luck in the future man! It's a very ambitious project and I think the switch to wood will guarantee that everyone will be able to witness your creativity for much longer than the foam carrier. Plus the deck will be able to survive landings....when I was younger I used to attach hooks on my planes and put a rubber band around my dresser, and have my planes land on it Navy style...scratched up the dresser, stressed out the plastic landing gear, but hell it was FUN!

Very cool that you have chosen to use the first for a prototype and now are moving on to "the real deal". This is an incredible undertaking!
But I have one question: Did you peel off the plastic sheeting off the foam sheet? It is a moisture barrier. It will peel right off if you start at a corner and pull. Also, aluminum tape(like Nashua brand)is the best way to join this stuff. It is available at Home Depot in the vent/duct work area. I'll be watching with keen interest to see how the new carrier develops! Hope you have much success! |

Woowza!!!
Anchors Aweigh!!! Couldn't read through 88 pages but looks like one epic project. Good to see somebody doing the Joe's Navy some justice. Currently working on a custom carrier air wing with F-18's, a couple F-14's and some VTOL F-35s (complete with Naval Aviators). Did I read that the thing is 22 feet?!?! Wow... As for a name, have you chosen yet? In tradition of the modern US Navy, aircraft carriers are usually named after military officials or presidents. Since this is a Joe ship might I offer the suggestion? The USS C. M. Abernathy, perhaps? I think Hawk has paid his dues and is worthy of being emblazoned on the side of a carrier. Anyway, looking forward to the finished project. Keep up the good work..
