Thanks for the info, and you're right...I don't understand why Hasbro would go to all the trouble of modding a torso like that when simply adding a regular removable scarf would be easier. Plus, as you said, it makes the figure near-useless for customs.
*sigh* There go my plans for using the Joe Trooper torso as a base for a Darklon custom. Crap!

It seems very oddly coincidental that the size and shape of the torso hole allows you to use the scarf/peg in old bodies though... I know Hasbro pretty much junked all the old o-ring bodies, so I don't think they have a hidden agenda, but... Just seems like it's too odd a coincidence to not've been done on purpose. Weird.
