Anyone have the makerbot replicator? Plastics seem too hard... but then I found the B9Creator... which looks awesome. The plastics looks perfect for custom Joes. And I don't think the cost of material is much.

That thing is really impressive. I wonder how long it will be before it's commonplace to have one of these in the home. The prices have been dropping so fast on 3D printers, it's getting to the point that I'm actually considering buying one.

As far as I can tell from their website, they aren't taking any orders right now, but they did have a Kickstarter, and $2,375 got you a full set-up.

For the time being you can use sites like Shapeways to build it for you as long as you design it on one of the common drafting/design programs.

I'd wait a couple years. Some of the higher end printers that even shapeways isn't using will have their patents run out and there will be vastly cheaper versions on the market.

I believe the printer above said when the kickstarter pledges are fufilled then the designs and drawings will all be put online for free... so you can make one yourself out of different materials. The Makerbot Replicator is available for < $2k. Of course I think if you're handy you can make one for less than 2k. For Joes I'd get a smaller unit... just need the bigger units if you want to make larger pieces or vehicle pieces.
