I am painting the knee pads on my Para Viper with acrylic paint then I am coating it with Mod Podge matte finish... unfortunately it hardens and looks like its gonna be all good but when I bend the knee large parts of the painted area act like soft plastic and curl up and fall off.
What can I do to make the high friction painted areas not chip or flake? i was thinking about maybe using a coat of super glue on the joint area and moving it just a little bit back and forth so that it doesnt seal the joint. Thanks.

I've run into similar problems.
I would advise against glue. With the friction there isn't a lot that can be done to counteract it. You could try primering it before painting as well. You may want to try enamel based paint like Testors Model Master. It could work better and hold up to the friction. |

It's fairly easy to access the upper part of the knee joint to remove material from either the knee joint, or the inside of the upper leg. Use a fresh Xacto blade to remove material from the lower leg, where it scrapes against the knee joint. You're basically just elongating the slot.
When I put super glue on a joint, I apply a thin coat to the exposed area of the joint, and let it dry. Then, I reposition the joint, touch up the paint, if it needs it, and put a thin coat on that section. |

Thanks a lot guys. I will be doing this very soon unless my Resolute Duke comes in the mail and I become obsessed with him.
My Para Viper is very close to complete. I extended the upper hoses, removed the bottom hoses and connection points, black washed the gear and his boots, painted his pads and knife sheeth black, removed the two side pouches and glued them too his body, glued his leg straps down at his waist line, cut his collar down so he could move his head more, and painted the lines on his chest and his name tag area black.... the result is amazing. all that is left it too make his knee joints perfectly painted. Thanks for the tips guys!

What color are you going for? If you're doing black, you might be able to dye the kneecap... you'd have to consult other people on tips beyond that, just an idea.

I've got a question, I recently took all my wierd colored weapons and spray painted them flat black. It looks good so i was going to try it on a couple figs I'm working on, but isn't it toxic? Am I going to get finger cancer and die?

Spray paint is often enamel or oil based, and that won't dry on most parts of the figure.
I've had some luck with using Krylon grey primer as a base, and then painting on top of that with enamel/oil based paints. But test this on a hidden area to see if it works for you. I've had great luck with using a black sharpie marker to base the whole area and then dry brushing on top of that. Give it a few coats of an acrylic sealer and I have had no problems that way. |
