I thought I had this brilliant idea on how to produce some really cool looking barriers for dios. Contained as part of the packaging for a toy my son had opened was this cool clear plastic blister bubble thingy that when inverted looked strikingly similar to a concrete barrier. I figured that I could paint and use it as cover for a future dio. It was approx 4 1/2 inches long, 1/2 inch wide and 1 inch deep.
But then, I decided to get funky. Why settle for one barrier when i could mass produce many of them perhaps to be used for future dios or to be shared with others. So, I proceded to liberally coat the inside of this bister with vaseline and then taking some left over cauking silicone, squirted that into the makeshift mold. I actually forgot about it for about a week and when i went to claim my newly minted molded barrier...a complete mess!!! The piece hardened on top about 1/2 way through. When I tried to separate it from the mold it essentially split in half with half coming out and the still gloopy mess of the other half remaining in the makeshift mold. Oh well, I tried and not really sure why it didin't work. Perhaps next time I need to drill air holes in the bottom to help the silicone cure? Who knows! Just thought I would share this. |

Yuck ! I don't think drilling holes will help, it sounds like everything you're using isn't meant to go together and just won't produce what you want no matter what you do.
You might have to invest a bit of money on proper equipment & supplies for molding & casting if you want this to work...

I it makes you feel better, I once dunked a figure in paint thinner because I didnt like how I painted it. But then it melted together.

Silicon Calulking is formulated to stay flexible and sticky...it will skin over when exposed to air, but like you experienced the parts not exposed to air stay relatively uncured. |

ahh man, years and years ago, I tried the same thing. Except I used plaster and put paperclips into the wet plaster to make it look like rebar. Yeah, used too much water, and I got plaster jello! It never set up solid, but it wouldve been great if it would have.
Just think about it, couldve drilled holes in it to show battle damage and with the clips in it wouldve looked just like the old concrete barriers! |

Thanks guys!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with failed experiments! Trial and error is a great method to develop new ideas and skills, but knowing when to quit is half the battle! Lesson learned: save the silicone caulk for the shower!!! |

awhile ago i was trying to make a QUICKSTRIKE into a troop carrier, after i had cut the back out for a ramp i needed to fill the sides
i don't recall even what i used to do it but when i went back out in the morning the whole back end had melted off basically any where i had put this stuff had pretty much liquified and i had to make my QUICKSTRIKE in to a Flatbed!!!! i probably should go find my notes and see what i used so i dont make the same mistake again, it had to be some thing i had just laying around, i hadn't done that many custom vechiles yet!! Experimenting sometimes leads to new methods that are useful, too. Like the peroxide method for de-yellowing plastic.

Ha! I did something similar -- I used my wife's salon-grade finger nail polish remover. Same effect!
