Hey guys. I need some advice.
I have a brown/silver 1990 Locust that I want to paint green/yellow to look like the Locust that came with the General. See, I have my original General I got in '90, but I lost the Locust long ago and I can't find another one anywhere. So I've decided now that I'm just going to paint up a brown/silver one and fool myself into believing I have my old Locust back. lol Painting the brown parts green and the silver parts yellow shouldn't be an issue, but the canopy is what I need advice on. As you probably know, the standalone Locust has a blue canopy, but the General version Locust has a smokey brown tint. Is there anything I can use to turn the blue canopy into a smokey brown canopy? I was thinking I could maybe use some sort of varnish or something, but I have no clue. That probably wouldn't work, but I'm just sort of going through all sort of ideas on how to get this canopy to look more brown than blue. Any ideas on this? Or am I s.o.l. until I can find a General version canopy? Also, what sort of paint would you recommend using to paint it green and yellow? Anything I could pick up at Wal-Mart? I apologize for my incoherent rambling and I appreciate any advice you fellas could give me on this. If not, would any of you happen to have a green/yellow Locust you really can't stand and want to get rid of? ;) Thanks, Dave

im not a pro customizer but i have heard alot of customizers use krylon spray paint if this helps at all, but you can alweys find the locust your looking for on ebay, i dont think there much money, for what you will spend on time effort and money you could just get it their, and save you the hassle. hope this helps.

I'm really not sure about the canopy. You may be able to paint it a neutral color to keep the blue from coming through and then find you an amber color or something closer if you can find it. For the main body colors, I would go with Krylon brand spray paint. I use that brand quit a bit for figures and vehicles alike. They also have a good color assortment from that brand. I would stay away from the fusion paint by Krylon unless its the camo ultra flat Krylon paint. Some plastics can have a reaction to the fusion paints. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice on the Krylon spray paint. Any ideas on how to make the blue-tinted canopy look like a translucent smokey brown color?

You can get a translucent paint at Wal-Mart that is made by Krylon. Its called Crystal Clear( I think ). Just to let you know though, I had tried to do the same thing your wanting to do and to the same copter a few years ago. I never could get it to look right( canopy ). I also had a hell of a time getting it to go on smooth as well. I really can't suggest a color though since its been a few years and I don't know what colors are available now.

Thanks for the reply and the advice. What type of paint or what type of product would you recommend using for the canopy so that I can still see the pilot? You know what I mean? I want the canopy to still be see-through after I paint it. I don't know if that's possible, but I figured you smart guys would know and could help out a dumb guy like me. I really don't know much about this sort of thing as you can see.

maby try a marker!! your poly idea aint a good one so dont try it!or varnish !i would try a brownish marker then you still can have the clarity! paints a paint! once you paint something thats it , its solid! unless its a semi transparent stain perhaps, an i doubt it would work or look good, most likey will be blotchy!maby you can look up that locust parts on ebay! look up the canopy! the propeller in the back is tuff to seperate, i thought bout paintin mine right after i assembled it, an couldnt get it seperated, so said forget paintin it!

Okay, I would suggest a RIT dye. It may help you. I prefer the liquid version, ( in your grocery store) try the dark brown, follow the instructions.....be careful with too hot of water, it may tweak the plastic a bit.

RIT dye, you say? Isn't that the clothing dye stuff? Hmmm... I'll ty that. If that doesn't work, I'll try the brown marker trick. Thanks again for all the help. This is a perfect example of why Hisstank is such a great Joe community. Thanks, fellas!

I'll tell you what you can check on if the the dye or marker doesn't work. Check on Tamiya X-19 Clear Smoke. You cn sparay several coats on the underside of the canopy and it should give you a tinted smoky look. Like I said though, it needs to be airbrushed for something that size and it will take several coats. Here is a 12inch Iron Man figure that I had painted in "Ghost Armor". This is the Tamiya Smoke X-19 sprayed over aluminum(face, upper arms, upper legs).
