I do better with vehicles than I do with figures.

I mainly use spray paint (Walmart Royal Blue is very close to Cobra blue) and Apple Barrel paints.

As for removing paint...I usually just scuff the surface lightly with sandpaper so that the new paint adheres.

I'm with Apac & SIL on this one, I'm horrible at painting figures. I'm much better with vehicles.

However, that being said, my girlfriend has customized a ton of figures for me. She uses acrylic paints, but that's really all I know

Flash, there's a few guys here that do wicked customs, so hopefully they'll post in this thread soon!

Try sanding the joints a bit with a fine grit sandpaper that helps the paint to bond to the parts better. stay away from gloss paints bad choice for painting joes.

Try to only use Acrylic paints they dry better and take to the parts much better. you could use the walmart Apple barrol brands cheap paint but works.

for that damn near production finnish I use Model masters paint. they run you about $3.00 a small jar but best brand to use.

To prevent chip when done painting you parts before putting the figure back together spray the parts with Testors dull coat works every time. hope this helps!

The only painting I do is to touch up the hair on my figures. If I do any customizing then it's just to switch out bodies or heads..........

I have to second what TR1ER said about using acrylics. I typically use Testors and have had no problems with gloss or flat. a few other tips:

1. Use a toothpick for fine details, cut the end so you have an angle instead of a point. a point can be very helpful for eyes though

2. sandpaper the shoulders on the arms, just leave the parts that goes into the body alone as that's what keeps the arm tight. this well keep layers of paint on your arms from rubbing off while moving the arm

3. Flat paints are great primers for softer plastic

That's all I have for now, here's my customs if you want to see what I've done with these tips:
