Found this pretty awesome article on a home 3d printer for 499. Pretty badass. one of these days we'll all be able to make custom parts. |

Resolution on home units is pretty poor versus something like what Shapeways uses.
Given time 3D printers will improve and cost less... but I don't think they'll effect customizing in the same way that they have manufacturing. |

I don't think they are that bad. But making parts for joes I think it needs some steps further. Only because of the size not sure if this printers can make real small pieces.
However I think this would ease a lot the molding, right now a mold is what costs more for people like SDS or Aly if you can somehow make a 3D model of the mold and use the printer it will speed up and ease the mold process. As far as I know every mold they do (because they are not done in metal) has a limited amount of casts. After that its trash with them and they need a new mold. Maybe Aly or someone from SDS could make a comment on this I'm sure this would be very helpfull in their work, probably would reduce costs, decrease production time and in the end make the parts they sell cheaper

Holy Hell I'm going to get one! I love shapeways and all, but it'd just be too sweet to do the stuff at home w/o the wait

That latest one does measure up detail wise to Shapeways, but Shapeways isn't anywhere near the most detailed on the market. With Shapeways, you are also paying for services that include fixing meshes and the more technical parts of printer operation and post op work
