Hey guys...
When doing a wash, do you prefer to add water directly into the paint on your palette and mixing it a bit, or do you keep one section with paint, one with water, dip the brush in the paint, and then dip it in the water? I am just curious as to whether or not you mix your water and paint... Thanks |

i'm no expert, but i try to get a good mix of paint and water in it's own container, and adjust as i go. it's too hard to get a consistent mix by just dipping in paint and then dipping in water.

Acryllic paint thinner, pour the paint out onto like a paper plate, then take your brush and put it into the thinner, then mix that into the paint you've poured out to use.

I saw Ratfink do a tut on this and it looked well. Do you find that it works well?

I usually put a drop or 2 of water in a bottle cap and add several drops of paint & mix, mainly for basecoating though.
If I only have to detail a small spot/area the I will dip the brush in paint then dip it in a little water, give the brush a quick wipe to remove excess paint and apply. For washes I use the Gamesworkshop washes.

All very good advice. I have had DECENT luck with double-dipping and then wiping off excess, but I felt like I was being lazy. I had never thought to use several of these techniques, but will experiment with most. Dry brushing will be critical, but this should give me the great start for my deeper layers.
I had never even thought of drybrushing first, and then washing over it. I always thought that the wash was the first step after cleaning and/or primering. |
