Has anyone ever dyed webgear? I have some yellow Cobra Air Trooper webgear I want to dye black using Rit dye I bought from Wal-mart. I just need some advice on how to mix the dye with water. Does the water need to be hot or boiling? How much dye per water ratio do I need to use? Will the webgear shrink? I am using the liquid kind of dye but I also have a box of powder dye in case the liquid type doesn't work well. Any help is appreciated.

She's the Spice Girl everyone knows. The only steadfast rule for RIT dye, is that you should not use any pots that you will want to cook with again. everything else is variable...

I've done it on the stove before, and if you are going yellow to black, you just have to heat it up, hold it in the solution for a minute or so, then remove and cool. If you put enough dye in there, it should go black, or at least a very dark grey. You might have to do it 2 or 3 times, depending. I guess you could microwave water in a plastic tub, but i've never tried that...

No problem. The trick is balancing the heat. Too hot, and the plastic will start to lose shape. You won't ruin it by starting warm, then going hotter til you see it working. Like i said, you just get more subtle color changes, or uneven splotches if the plastic doesn't achieve the same temperature. Metal tongs to hold the item to be done are a must. If you drop it in the dye container, it will stick to the bottom or float to the top and not color evenly...

Pics when you are done. I have so many tan web-geared troops, and have long considered dying or painting them black.

I have done this before with the air troopers yellow webgear. I took a coffee mug and boiled some water in the microwave. Then I took the rit dye about 1/4 a packet(powder) i think and mixed in. Then added the webgear in. let it sit. I think I reheated the cup, with the webgear inside it, up in the microwave again.
