Any ideas on how I can build a Moon surface display/backdrop for my Star Brigade vehicles? It would need it to look like real rock but it would have to be really big but lightweight. I can't think of any way to do it. Been thinking about it for a long time but still can't come up with anything. Plaster, cement or Sculpey would be too heavy & would crack apart. Styrofoam would be a pain in the ass to work with. Paper mache would look like a crappy 1st grade science project. I'm at a loss here.

I think all the things you mentioned would work fine, you would just have to put a lot of time in to it.
Build a really large slightly dome shaped base out of styrofoam, then plaster over it, and then build up a heavy texture, then sculpy on some finer details, give it one hell of paint job and then add some real gray playground sand for effect. |

The first thing I thought of was the moonscape craters from Games Workshop. Then I did a quick search for some tutorials. I found some stuff but this tutorial seemed to be the most helpful. Foam/polystyrene will probably be the easiest material to use. The Owens Corning pink insulating kind might work well here.

Back in elementary school I made a civil war diorama. I used plaster & cement to make the ground look real. It was ok just to move once & get graded but it weighed a freakin ton & started to crack & crumble real fast. I need something lighter than that. Quote:

get some big packaging foam (like from a flat screen tv) and sand it down to make the shapes you want.
hit it lightly with the krylon texture paint; it will melt a bit, but once dry will look exactly like rock. i do this for my customs. it's fast, easy, and looks solid.

Krylon texture paint? Does it come in light gray? I have an old can of Rustoleum American Accents sandstone, it looks like rough desert sand when it dries. Does Walmart carry the Krylon stuff? |

I would start with these for the base:
TowerHobbies.com | 91695 Plastruct Moon & War Craters (2) The GW stuff is usually too small to work with 4" scale figures, but these bases from Plastruct will look perfect.
