(This is to add to Lance858a's storyline. Hope you like it.)
In the distant future, Cobra had nuked and conquered the world, dividing it up between Destro, Cobra Commander, The Baroness, and the twins Tomax and Xamot. Cobra warlords held the lands and virtually enslaved the people working on them. In the wastelands lurked the rebels and all others trying to escape cobras' grip. Very few ever escaped totally from Cobra. Cobra controlled all communications, travel, and maintained armies that were constantly patrolling their borders, both on the ground and in the air. Security was tight... Not just tight but paranoid tight, always assuming somebody was listening in on them: And forever attempting to listen in on everybody else as well... With all the constant spying on each other, everybody more or less knew what everybody else was doing... And became very nervous when unknown drones were seen in their airspace... and became even more concerned when it was realized that these unknown drones were being seen all over the world , and that these drones belonged to none of the four sides. These Ghost Drones, as they became to be called, were beyond anything any of the four sides could have created. They were invisible to radar and infrared, with an impossible nonreflective silvery coating. In addition to this, they could only be seen at short range... at long range they blended into the sky so well they became invisible. The Ghost Drones had first been spotted lurking close by Cobra military bases and on the extreme edges of battlefields during battles... but nobody believed the eyewitnesses. There were no confirming radar reflections or infrared signatures and the few photographs taken of them showed only a vague blur. It wasn't until one was accidentally shot down during a battle that their existence was confirmed. And even then, not for very long... ten minutes after it crashed and pics were taken, it self destructed. Examination of the few fragments that were recoverable revealed an unknown alluminun-titanium alloy and a special coating of materials unknown to Cobra scientists. Whose drones were these? Where were they made? And what made the Cobra leadership more nervous was their virtual invisibility: What could be used on a drone could be used on a larger aircraft, like a fighter or bomber, and nobody would know they were there until they struck. |

some months later, a cobra aircraft on patrol snapped these pics of a second kind of drone that flew by it... A drone that had no radar or infrared signature. And one that blended into the sky so well it became invisible.

No, a system called Active Camoflauge. (Wikipedia, Boeing Bird Of Prey) This uses colored lights built into the skin of the vehicle to change its coloring to match its surroundings. In the case of aircraft, bluish lights adjusted to match the surrounding sky break up the solid silouette of the aircraft, making it harder or impossible to see. It was used during world war 2: German U-boats were able to see the dark outlines of the allied subhunting aircraft coming towards them and dive to safety before the aircraft could attack them. Lights were mounted in the nose and leading edges of the aircraft and were adjusted to match the light level of the sky, which broke up the dark outline, and the U-boats could no longer see them coming. They could still hear them, but by then it was too late to dive to safety: Many U-boats were sunk because of this. The writers of Star Trek picked up on this and used it as the Romulan Cloaking Device. The infamous Predator invisibility suit also did the same thing. |
