Custom Wild Covert Action Team
Phew, I've been busy this past week. Now I debated holding this off for the next CustomCon since it's been a while since I've entered something, but with the Wildstorm imprint coming to an end, I decided to show these now rather than wait until December. So here is my take on Jim Lee's iconic WildC.A.T.s I wanted to do an updated look for the team, and I've been sketching different designs for a while and came up with the roughs for these final figures months ago and started putting together the fodder. Then like most custom projects I got sidetracked and molehill became a mountain and I put it off for the longest time. But I've been off this past week, picked up the Warblade fodder, and the rest is history. |

Let's break down the team now.
Spartan: Spartan was kind of a hard redesign for me. I went through a lot of fodder after I cam up with the sketch before I finally settled on this look. I originally switched the color scheme having a while jacket, but wanted to really keep with the original look and kept the original color scheme. Grifter:
Now I struggled a lot with Grifter's mask. He's always had that handkerchief mask and it's always been part of his iconic look, but it just seemed off somehow. So I went with the ski-mask look and gave him a headset as well. I wanted to drop the trench coat as well to give him the more militaristic look. Recipe: Head - ROC Firefly with sculpted hair; random fodder for headset Torso - ROC Duke Arms - IM2 Nick Fury Legs - POC Dusty Gear - POC Duke |

Warblade:
Warblade was the easiest for me to conceptualize. I love the look of the ROC RIA armor, specifically how organic it looks on the arms (at least for Duke; it looks much bulkier and far less organic on Scarlett) so those arms were the first thing I thought of. I thought about having the ROC Docter hands as attachments, but decided instead to go with bigger and longer hands which I took from an X-Men Origins: Wolverine Sabertooth figure. He may be my favorite of the bunch. Recipe: Head, torso - 25th Torpedo Arms - ROC Duke Hands - XMO Sabertooth Upper legs - ROC Elite Viper Lower legs - POC Firefly Last edited by Weapon XIX; 09-27-2010 at 08:27 PM.. |

Zealot:
Now while the ROC armor looked organic on the men, it looked much more like structured armor on the women. And when I thought of a lot of the different armor Zealot has worn over the years it's been a little bulky (that is, when and where she was wearing armor). I thought about showing more skin, but it struck me as a little odd that a Kherubim warrior woman would be exposing so much. So instead I went with a more covered up look and one where I let the red work its way into the outfit rather than let the whole thing be red and let other details work in. I also struggled with the hair, but ultimately wen with short rather than long because it seemed like it suited the warrior nature of the character. Voodoo:
Voodoo was easy for me. I took her catsuit look and combined it with her non-catsuit look, dropped the head-dress and voila. The exposed legs and the furry boots just didn't look right with the rest of the look of the team, so I went with the pants instead. Maul:
Now Maul was the toughest. Once I started rolling I did the others almost nonstop over the course off a few days and then got stumped when I got to Maul. The biggest question, of course, was his size. Maul can be a skinny little brainiac, or a giant purple smashing machine. At one point I was using a 6" Marvel Legends figure so he was be as big as the Yellow Jacket figure I've integrated into my Marvel Universe collection. I thought about using a movie Hulk figure, an MU Hulk figure, and ML Hulk figure - but eventually I thought that having such a huge Maul figure might throw off the look of the team a bit. So instead I decided to build a huge Joe. He's smaller so he retains more of his intellect, but he's still bigger than the average man. In terms of size he's a little larger than the Marvel Universe big man figure aka Dark Avengers Venom, Warpath, Piledriver, etc. and he towers over everyone else in the team, so he's kind of got the same scale proportions of the original Maul figure as compared to the other original WildC.A.T.s figures. Lastly I opted to make him bald rather than give him the skull cap/mask or give him blonde hair. I thought the smooth head was more indicative of Maul but thought the mask was a bit much for my redesign. Recipe: Head - 25th Serpentor Torso, arms - Marvel Universe Luke Cage Legs - ROC Heavy Duty in fatigues Boots - MU Blade Hope you enjoy, and thanks for looking! |
