Many thanks again, everyone. Recipes? Hmmm... let's see if I can remember!
SE is fairly straight forward for bpdy parts, with the exception of the gear. Refer to the original thread, or the WIP thread for details on that monster... please. The others get a bit more involved, but not too bad. The Black Ninja is a Microman body with Hard Masters head (sculpted hair), and SS hands from the 3rd Cobra 5-pack (V.2?). Everything else is fabric/leather/floss/styrene, etc, etc. For the Black Ninja, I wanted a Ninja that was more true to history, and also having more range of motion from the body - especially the arms. After looking at what was available, Microman was the winner(love the shoulder/chest ball!). And since he was going to be 99% clothed, you don't see all of those Microman joints anyway. For the rest, I tried to use smaller/thinner Joe body parts, where appropriate, to better fit with the clothing. This is what makes the difference between bulky, snow-suits or clown pants... and clothes that look more natural at this scale. Some MU figs are reaaally good for this purpose, and are my personal pick at the moment. Anyway... SS's lower legs, being wrapped with his pants, are RA Scarlett's - I believe. Torso is Res SS with SS V.2 arms/hands, and SS V.1 upper legs. RoC SS head and Res SS for the feet. Red Ninja is Jungle SS torso with SS V.2 arms, hands are comic pack Res SS, and Red Ninja head. Lower legs from either RA Scarlett or Baroness. Again, Res SS feet. Masked Ninja Master is Hard Masters head, Ninja-Ku torso, 2nd Joe 5-pack Shipwreck upper arms (sleeve detail removed), and SS V.2 lower arms/hands. Legs/feet are Ninja-Ku. And of course all the clothes and accessories. I think that's about it. Last edited by Obi-Shinobi; 11-04-2010 at 10:05 AM.. |

Yeah, these are all top notch. I was impressed when you did your first white ninja in soft goods. Then you created Tenchu for the ninja contest and I was blown away. The Red Ninja is fantastic, an excellent translation of the Sideshow version. Storm Shadow looks good but I think the black ninja is even better.
Snake-Eyes will always be the bar setter for custom excellence. I'm pretty sure it was the first time anyone put so much working detail from a 12" figure into a 4" figure and made it work. How many people were fooled into thinking it was a custom Sideshow Snake-Eyes? |

No matter how many times I look at your work, I still can't believe they are 3 3/4. You must have very steady hands to do all these.
No words can describe my admiration for you. You made me see 'toys' as not just toys. Wow!!! If only I live in US. I will go to you and beg you to accept me as your disciple. |

Are you using special fabric for these? I'm asking because I notice that toy manufacturers use fabric you don't find in fabric stores. Do you use a sewing machine or hand sew these outfits? I love these by the way, great job.

And thanks again! You guys are too kind.
As for materials - At this point, I use bandanna fabric for the main clothing because it's thin enough to more closely match a scaled fabric. Some items are made with the Lego micro-canvas because of it's slight rigidness. Example: the outer vest on the Ninja Master is Lego canvas. I did this to purposely give it a slightly heavier fabric look, which it does. To sew, or not to sew? My opinion? Since I'm rather picky about scale, and/or attempting to get things closer to scale - I will not use thread to sew my clothes, since the thread is much too large for any scaled clothing. Also, look at 99% of any factory sewn clothing (1/18) and what do you see? You should see a 1:1 sewn seam on the 1:18 part. This makes for bulky seams, and ill-fitting clothes. Realize, that a 1/18 seam like what's in your blue jeans, would be around 1mm wide - if that. You get the idea. So what's the answer? Or, what's my secret? That's too easy - Fabric glue. I creat very small seams which are glued together, then trimmed down to the absolute minimum (depending). Having said all that - sewing will work of course, if that's what you really want to do. It comes down to personal preferences, and what you consider to be an acceptable finished product. All in all, what any of this means is - try different methods/concepts/techniques/materials etc, until you find what works best for you and yours. There is no "one right answer" for any of this. I just found what works for me... so far. |
