I use Games Workshop and Applebarrel Acrylic paints. I will use blue painters tape to mask off the parts that I do not want painted or primed, prime the figure, then go to town painting.
Some just put the paint directly on the figure without priming it. Everyone has their own preference. It's mainly about trail and error. LOL

Not any one way to get things done. Each person seems to come at it from a different angle. Perhaps you could find someone that you like the way thier customs come out, and shoot them a PM. I use the Games Work Shop and other minature paints for my customs, but others like different brands and types.
Good luck on finding your preference... The rest of you... How about putting your Preferences out there. I know I would like to know also, so I can broaden my base. |

My preference is that I don't have to paint. If I do have to paint, I will only paint the part if it's not a joint. I use acrylic paints just because they are easier to manage. I don't have any particular preference. I usually use whatever model paints I have, be it Testors or Tamiya. I do like the Tamiya ones better though.

priming the figure is the base paint layer... normally a simple spray on that will cover the figure's existing paints. I normally do not primer. I either dye the figure (parts) first or, i use light (oh, so light and multiple)coats to cover it. Either way, it takes practice. I found dying the parts helps to cover up for chipping and flaking at the joints.

wwhoo hoo! Copy-pasta!
I know there is not a whole lot of detail on Hasblo...err Hasbro Figures, but with a little patience and some practice youcan make what little detail that is there REALLY shine. The easiest thing to do when Painting figures, of ANY SCALE ( i mostly work in 1/6 scale, and 28mm scale) You want to only use Acrlyic paints, as Enamel hardly ever really dries, and you want to Water down your paints to the point where they are see-through when applied. think the consistancy of Ink, or Milk. Once you've got your paints properly thinned, then start appliing them in layers. it will take 10-15 layers to get an even coat, but the finished result will look THOUSANDS of times better for it. Also, if you want to add depth to the Hair for example, after you get the base color, find a lighter shade of the same color, and do one layer of it, then mix up a lighter still shade, and dry-brush it onto the head. |

For really small detail work, I like to use my old super-fine tipped Gundam markers. They work GREAT for stuff like eyes and shirt buttons.
One day, I'll actually post some of my pics... one day. |

Acryllic paints are an absolute must. I use the games workshop paints, but prefer vallejo paints because they have a good bit more pigment while sticking just as well. Also I recommend Micron Pens for the super fine lettering that is hard to do with paint. The color range is not as good as with paints. but you can do really detailed lettering that is next to impossible with a brush

Always use Acrylic paints on joes its a must
the enamel will stay wet for a long time and it just makes a mess of a figure and as far as brands go its just like anything in life pretty much u get what ya pay for try to use different ones that fit ur budget and eventually you will figure out what paints are good for what type of custom you creating sum you might want Gloss or u might want flat or a combination of both another tip that helps is try to thin ur paint with a lil bit of water when ur painting so it dosent come out globby and thick it may take more coats but the coats will be even just sum stuff i thought might help when i got into it i just dived in and learned the hard way and like sumone posted above try to find costomizers that u like there work and try to get sum pointers from them as it will save you big headaches and disappointment later im still learning and im 100 customs deep now its a thing that takes alot of practice and patience to become a real master like some of the guys on this board that i look up to myself
