I recently inherited a huge box of vintage Joe vehicles from a friend who's moving away. In there were a few vehicles I've always wanted ever since I was a child; others I could really care less for, and some were outdated now that Hasbro re-released them for the 25th line.
So, since I have more black 25th HISS tanks than I need already, the last thing I needed was a beat up piece of crap vintage one. Now that I can compare the old to the new, I can see how much Hasbro has learned from past problems and can improve something when they feel inclined to do so. The vintage guns are crap and can't stay in place because of the poor mechanism: the cockpit relies on some weird tab inside to be held open, as though simple friction wouldn't be enough. Oh, and the vintage turret comes out pretty easy. Okay, enough ranting, on with the pics! Since I hated the old gun mechanism, I opted to do something different. Ideally, a vehicle like this would have other armor to protect it, so that makes up for it's two-round capacity. Plus, I got to use some of those stupid big guns! A close-up on my improved grill/intake. I figured the mesh would filter dust from the intake, supposing that's how this machine operates. Who cares, though. It looks cool, eh? |

Camouflage pattern was inspired by WWII German splinter pattern:
Zeltbahn.net - Wehrmacht camouflage patterns I say inspired, because camo is always evolving. To get this effect, I simply painted it in one colour, then covered sections in painter's tape, then painted over again in a different colour; after it was dry, I removed the tape to reveal a pretty sharp pattern of shapes! The gray rain marks were painted by hand afterward, however. Rear view... Here's a close-up on my customized footpeg, made smaller to fit the modern foot holes by merely whittling it down until I got the desired size. I only had one original footpeg, though (one was broken off), so I decided to store a fuel drum there instead. And here's a detail on the Cobra symbol. Simply cut from the figure stands, I glued these on then dabbed red on them for effect. I'm actually quite happy with hos this came out. Finally, here's a good look at the gunner figure. The helmet comes from a Star Wars Naboo guard or some damn thing, which I bought about a dozen of (some red, some yellow) since they're on clearance no matter where you find them. They make excellent tanker helmets, so all my HISS gunners have'em. Pretty neat, eh? HISS numbers came from Cobrastickers.com. Excellent decals, highly recommended! |

Nice camo. The Cobra symbol is very cool, I had something similar in my mind a few weeks ago. It's a great use for those stands.

I love this, especially the fact that it's based off an actual camo pattern. I'm SUCH a nerd for that kind of thing.

Awesome job on the camo. I would think that would have been pretty hard. Also love the Cobra logo, really looks mint. Looks like it belongs there as well.
Overall very nice job. |
