Yes I know, I have tried this before, but the pieces were too big to fit in my small pot. Until Now. This past weekend I came into possession of this little guy.
He is hand sculpted obviously and not a bad gate. It does have a couple problems. First its too thick for my taste, around an inch in places. Second, it is cast in plaster of paris. WAY too fragile. So I hoped against hope that it would fit in my pot, and it does. With about 1/4 inch to spare. So I boxed him up. and rubber was poured. I took it out of the pot this morning. WOOHOO the box held. I was a little worried since it was made of posterboard. So I deboxed it and I have a new shiny stargate doughnut mold. As of right now it is being post cured in my toaster oven. I will pour rubber in about 90 minutes. |

Here it is with Destro for scale. I just finished pouring resin, in a couple hours, I will have my first non-breakable, single piece stargate. I'm excited. Now I just need to build a gate stand. |

Sean- I think you may have outfoxed yourself there. Curious where your planning to make your cut, and at what angle your going to pour that where resin isn't going to seep out or where you won't have mold misalignment due to the weight of the silicone at the joint.
The only thing I can think of is to cut it on the upper inside and outside corner and make it a box style mold with lid. Although that might lead to issues where you catch champange bubbles in the upper part. On second thought, your planning to cut it on the outside upper edge and let the inside stay attached aren't you? Clever, then you'll have a built in pseudo-hinge. Hope that catching air in the upper face won't be an issue. |

Hey Aly,
I didnt show it in the first post because of the 4 pic maximum but it is an open back mold, rather than the envelop molds I usually do. Once I get a thickness I like (and a pot tall enough) I will look into make a two piece mold, with a solid center, that will stand vertically. I left a little bit of the silicone that crept under the original as a catch edge, but in essence it looks like every open backer smooth on shows in their tutorials so I am pretty confident it will work without issue. I am just working on determining the correct volume of resin for the thickness of gate I want. About an hour and I will see how the first one went. anyway, here is the mold. Nothing sophisticated, but since the back of the gate is smooth anyway, no need to mold both sides. |

First one is out, other than the cast not being level because I forgot to put a board under the mold I am pretty happy with my first attempt. I will be pouring it again later today with a different resin to see how the results differ. |
