I think vehicles started to go downhill beginning in '86. They looked too much like toys with the bright colors, and the concepts were pushing it (the Havoc's pilot seat, the strangeness of the Stun, etc.). I want to add a Havoc to my collection for the nostalgia of it, but man, it is pretty ugly.
I specifically remember being 12 and looking at an 86 brochure and thinking "What is Hasbro doing to my beloved GI Joe". On topic.....Very nice HVAC, I have often wrestled with the idea of doing this kind of thing to all my vehicles but then never do it because I don’t want to ruin the original toys. |

WOW!!! If by some chance Hasbro releases a 30th anniversary version, I hope they use your color scheme. Your paint apps ROCK!!! Awesome job!
You can probably use a needle to make a sturdy control stick, just shorten it with wire cutters and paint it gray/silver. Since you display your vehicles without any figures, you won't have to worry about the paint chipping off onto the figures hands. (F.Y.I. It looks like your missing the four track covers. Of course not having them doesn't effect your paint aesthetics, they do work well with the brighter green of the original H.A.V.O.C. YOJOE.COM | H.A.V.O.C. [Heavy Articulated Vehicle Ordnance Carrier] I fondly remember thinking "wtf?" in 1986. While some of the vehicle designs (such as huge canopies), along with the bright colors of figures like LifeLine, Sci-Fi, and Wet-Suit made no rational since to me, even at the age of 10, they yet somehow, really appealed to the inner kid in me, and were still fun to play with regardless. Although when I picked up the Alley-Viper on my 13th birthday, he just looked so huge & bad@$$ design-wise, even before putting on his accessories, That I can honestly say that when it comes to that particular figure, my rational mind doesn't exist, that even if Hasbro painted him in black & gray urban camo, it wouldn't make him any more or less cooler than he already was. (The 25th Alley-Viper look physically puny by comparison, imho.) |
