Steel started a topic:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...g-customs.html that pushed me to ask a question that I've had for awhile, and I was curious as to how other Tankers perceived their own customs... How long does it take for your customs to "fit in" as just "one of the Joes"? Immediately? Two weeks? Never? For me, as soon as a custom is finished, it doesn't necessarily fit in with the rest of my collection. Sometimes, it's due to the fact that I did a half-ass job, used gloppy paint or screwed up and ruined the right part, so I ended up with a lower-quality construction... regardles, sometimes it's obviously a custom. I've definitely got a few of those in the mix, unfortunately. Some of my better ones, though—lined up with the regulars—my girlfriend can't tell which is which. She's usually my Litmus test as to whether they pass or not, and she's not afraid to bust my balls. I know my current Lifeline sucks, which is why I've not posted it! Haha. Usually, it takes me a week or so for them to finally "be" one of the gang. Maybe it's because they're the "new kid", or maybe because I've seen what they were beforehand, but they have to grow on me. Very few looked "great" as soon as I was done... In the sense that I was like "yep, that's So-and-So." Some, over time, depreciate in "success", others grow on me more and I feel like they sort of become the character I intended them to be. What do you guys think? |

My customs fit in right away, since during the brainstroming part of designing a custom, the idea of "fitting in" is the first thing that I think about before actually starting the custom.

Mine fit in pretty perfectly and right away. I'm quite satisfied with my customizing skills.

I collect a little differently, apparently, than others here. I mainly collect 2 characters -- Firefly and Snake Eyes. I also have a few of the 25ths and RoC's that I display on my TTBP. I actually have pics of my collection in my albums if anyone is interested. Anyway, I have done a few customs, and they get displayed with everything else, so all of my Firefly and Snake Eyes customs are displayed together, and then I did a custom Ripcord and Crazylegs, as well as some other paratroopers, and I've displayed them all together. I did a custom Lowlight and displayed it in a case between the ARAH LL and DTC LL. So I guess you could say my customs "fit in" from the get-go.

same here.. i ussually try to do an update or at least keep with the feel of the rest of my joes. I never really do anything real outlandish and since im not the best when it comes to painting i try to do customs that require little to no paint at all

All my customs are kitbashes, same paint apps, equipment, heads, bodies, etc.. as the rest of the Joes.
So they fit in right away cause they match. Nothing stands out as being better, or worse.

I usually make a story line based around the character and then I am good to go. Most of my Joes are just army builders though, I always need deaths in my stories.

Most of my customs aren't from the standard Joe universe, so I don't think too much about them "fitting in." Plus since I'm constantly mixing 1/18 lines I account for a design disparity in my collection/displays.
Sometimes I do like thinking about how they might fit in storywise - like when I made a Dark Knight based on the Reactive Impact Armor Duke. I liked to think that in the ROC verse, the Joes contracted Wayne Enterprises for some armor/weapons, but that Wayne had kept some for himself. But for the most part I find my customs fitting right in with the rest of my collection. |
