I'm pretty lucky as far a space goes. I own a large block of land and have garaging for 8 cars. Since I don't have 8 cars, I have a bar and a work shop (turned dio room) instead. The Dio is set up inside a double garage with one of my sports cars, but I'm thinking I may have to move the car to make room for dio expansions. I'm thinking a tank battle by a river.

in the mean time there are few PTE fans here that also post a lot on joedios . They might be able to help you with your figure quest. Flickr: POWER TEAM ELITE (1:18) also in my albums under Tracker's customs I posted my PTE delta unit

I've been hard at work since I last posted pics. I am building a river diorama to attach to my trench battle.
The Trench Battle Dio is very close to being finished, but I’m waiting on the arrival of some sand bags and other accessories, as well as the million or so figures I bought from the good people of these forums, to complete it. (I could go a bunch more desert camo varieties if anyone has any to sell me, as well as some chap mei soldiers for head swaps…) See here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post1552336 Once they get here I will post some more detailed pics. Those of you following the project may notice that I repainted the large building. I was very unhappy with the different colours, and couldn’t work out what the culprit was. It turned out that it was different spray cans of the same coloured paint… The difference was very subtle to the naked eye, but with the flash photography it really became apparent. I put a soldier on a custom “Harley” type bike for a laugh, so if you notice him, worry not, he is not there to stay. Also, you may notice the modifications I made to the Hummer(s). The desert Hummer now has a bull bar style front bumper (swapped with the jungle Hummer) and a grenade launcher, formerly a resident of the plastic PTE tower and formerly a crappy shade of green. It replaces the odd looking rocket launcher. The Jungle Hummer is missing its rear wheel/diff assembly. I am going to bury it in a plaster mould and make it look like it got bogged in some soft sand and abandoned. I might smash it a bit so it looks like a grenade put it out of its misery. There are some twigs littering the back corner, they will be given a block of wood to stand in (once the paint dries) and will be covered in thick flock to resemble foliage. The upright at the back will be a waterfall. I made it out of plaster and some crushed brick. It is far from complete, but gives an idea of what I’m doing. I will use plaster to build up the walls of the river, and make the ground uneven and realistic, as opposed to the perfectly level plot the trenches are built on… (suspension of disbelief, suspension of disbelief…) You can see that I’ve drawn the outline of the river. I will build a bridge crossing it. It will be at about the middle of the dio, behind the broken hummer. I think it will be a 2 piece job with a section that rises to allow boat traffic, since I have several inflatable style boats to add. I have hung a soldier from the black hawk. He is riding the rope “thing” that came with my first modern Gi-Joe toy; Baroness. An expensive way to buy a piece of string, I know. Just don’t ask me which version she is. Other than that she is from the movie line, I couldn’t tell you to save my self. I am yet to find a tank for sale locally, so finding 2 or 3 for my tank battle on the other side of the river may be a problem, but I have a couple of bikes, horses and a camel to fill it out for now. Before you go crook at me for building it too low for the other dio, I did this on purpose as it is an easier hight to work on while I plaster the details. The table has been built with a centre section that will slide under the dio to lift it to exactly the right hight. I am absolutely fantastically brilliant like that :P. Also, I only have them together for the purpose of taking the photos. It’s not been like that throughout the build process. - Ian Photos: |

Hi There
I have spent quite a few hours working on my dio this week in preparation for the arrival of my new figures, some of which arrived today. The Green Army base is a little over crowded, but many of those figures will find their way onto the other table when it’s complete. If you look closely to the right of the map inside the crowded green base, you can see a head swapped soldier. I used a PTE police officer head on a PTE soldier. Oddly, they had entirely different attachments, so it needed a little bit of modification (sandpaper) to fit. Due to the difference in the attachment/pivot design the reverse swap could not be achieved, but since I don’t want the police man for this dio, it was not a big loss to see him end up headless. On the new table, there is a little more plaster work to be done, then I can start painting, but if you look closely at the pics, you can make out a lot of the detail in the plaster. The river snakes from the base of the waterfall to the edge of the table. The edges around the river are a little higher to form banks. I have a couple of inflatable rafts that I have painted in camo and a bombed out hummer that I will partially bury in sand. I have given most of the surface of this table some texture to add a little realism. The first table is dead flat and relies on structures to break up the level and distract the viewer. I wanted the new one to have a bit of realistic terrain, but I had to take care not to go too far, which would make the other table look too out of place. So, no rolling hills, but plenty of lumps and bumps. The plaster will be painted and given a surface layer of sand on the hummer side and green flock on the tree side. I have a bag of aquarium gravel to line parts of the river bank with, and I will paint over the textured plaster of the river with several colours of blue and white for water effects. I am also going to mould tyre tracks in plaster leading into and out of the river to the stuck hummer. The waterfall wall will get a few more rocks and maybe a dead tree and some moss. You may have noticed the plastic film wrapped around the base of the hummer and the trees. This is so I could plaster around the blocks they are built on so that they wouldn’t stick together. I need these items to be removable for photos from different angles. The same is true of the waterfall. I will hang brown linen around the edges of the table to hide the legs/car/other shit underneath and a blue tarpaulin around the top to hide the rest of the garage. The trees still need more leaf cover, so I will spray paint some coconut wool and clump it over the branches. I’m also thinking of hanging a camo net over the tower by the trees to give it a “hidden in the trees” look. I’m still waiting on sandbags to finish up the main display… Also, my indoor base dio is coming along VERY slowly, still no pics to show of that one yet. Also, look out for “PTE Blain” with his Marauder Minigun, he don’t got time to bleed. - Ian |

Thanks.
I got one of the rifle racks from marauder, but it is so tiny, and only fits 3 rifles, so I made my own. I will likely still use the marauder unit, I already sprayed it brown as it was wood textured, but black. I think I will place it in one of the trenches. |

Nice work buddy. I love the PTE accesories and vehicles. I use the PTE figs as corpses in the background mostly in my dios.

Well. Here it is, "finished" at last.
I'm STILL waiting on sandbags to complete my trench cover, and I am building a Command Centre for my desert camo soldiers, but that will be displayed separately, so I think it's fair to say it’s done. More desert camo soldiers are due in the mail in a week or so, so they won’t be so heavily out numbered by jungle troops. I have made a few custom soldiers too. There is the blonde one I mentioned in an earlier post (a PTE police head) and several that use parts of Chap Mei figures that I repainted. I have a police belt with holster and on one soldier, I don't know why, just because it was there, I suppose. I painted a bald head with camo for another, and I used a jacket and hockey masked head to make a "Casey Jones" soldier. I should make him a golf club to wield, but for the moment he has a sawed off shotgun and a silenced sub machine gun. There are a lot of things I would do differently if I could do it again. (Providing I could afford to do them any differently). But over all, I am happy with the finished product. All I need to do now is photograph it in some good light with a proper camera. Maybe make a sequence of setups with a battle being played out. Let me know what you think, anyway. And, if you have questions about how/why I did something, shoot. - Ian Last edited by Exciter; 05-11-2010 at 09:29 AM.. |
