Hi all. So recently I have been picking up Gi-Joe Skystrikers on Ebay and what not to customize. I was basically going to do exactly what SuperFlanker had done with one his SkyStrikers and make it more accurate to the actual F-14 Tomcat. You just have to give props to SuperFlanker!! He really upped the bar here and proves that nothing is impossible with a little thinking, some hard work, and a little talent!
Upon looking at his creation which is absolutely awesome I realized very fast that I have never worked with plastics in this manner. I was an avid action figure customizer, and had done some other scene related customs but never a retool on a vehicle. ANYHOW this leads me to the creation of this post. MOST GI-Joe vehicles are not actually 1:18th scale, in fact they are more accurate to 1:32 scale. After finding this out it dawned on me..... If that's the case then why couldn't you use 1:32 scale model parts to complete the skystriker and make it look more real? So I wanted to put this out there for all the customizers here. We can in essence use 1:32 scale parts weapons, etc etc on our existing GI-Joe vehicles to enhance them! I am going to attempt to find parts that I want to use for my customs namely the Skystriker and as I progress I will post pictures, tutorials, and so on. ALSO I came up with another great idea for the paint schemes, lettering, etc etc. Why not use 1:32 scale decals! This however has brought me to a crossroads. I cannot find sticker type decals of actual carrier wing units for the F-14 tomcat, OR any other type aircraft for that matter. I do find them in water slide decals in abundance. I was never a real fan of water slide decals, I always found them to be such a royal pain in the ass to use. Anyone have any suggestions on this, maybe some hookups to websites that do in fact make quality sticker type decals? Any info would be greatly appreciated. My hope is to compile a comprehensive list of places to go to get everything you need to customize the SkyStriker into real life F-14 Tomcat Carrier wing units, AND a full F-14A-B (skystriker model) to F-14D custom parts lists. What's the difference you ask? Well the F-14D had better engines with MUCH COOLER looking exhaust Vents in the rear, it had updated radar, was capable of utilizing laser guided bombs, had double external fuel tanks, and more. So anyhow I am hoping to get feedback from all you crazy customs people and possibly put together some great tutorials and databases to put out there for of course me BUT also for everyone else that wants to spice up their USS FLAGG or Custom Carrier scenes! Thanks guys for all the support, info, and contributions in the future. |
