I read through Zoomie2001's Aircraft Carrier project over the past two days (its like 57 pages right now...) and I've decided to build a pair of ships, one for each side. (nothing for the Oktober guard right now) Both of them will be based on a 4'x8' piece of plywood.
The JOE's will get a small amphib w/a flight deck, able to handle helo's, SHARC's, Skyhawk's and if anyone knows where to get a 1:18 Harrier that'd be great. I served ont eh USS Saipan (LHA-2) for three and a half years and one Med cruise. The well deck would be able to handle the Whale and some kind of LCU type vehicle, I'll have to look around to see what my options are. I'm thinking of installing the J.U.M.P. jet pack playset somewhere on the top of the island, as well as using parts from the USS Flagg I find online like radars to flesh it out. The island will consist of at least four levels, including the bride, CIC and a briefing room. I've got a similar idea for Cobra. The ship will host launch tubes along its edge to house Firebat's, made of PVC pipe. Possible similar ones for Trouble Bubbles. At least a pair of Moray's will grace its well deck. |

I've been wanting to do something similar to this for a while now, but I'm lacking space and money. For the time being, I've been working out some designs. Lots of luck to you - post pictures as soon as you make some progress.

I'll pr'bly wait until I've got the flight decks built before contacting him about it...
Right now I'm trying to decide if the Firebat launch tubes on the Cobra Assault Platform should be vertical or horizontal. |

I'm thinking that one piece of 4x8 foot plywood is kinda crowded w/ Joe helo's on it. Its got to be able to launch and recover the Tomahawk, Chinook, Blackhawk and two smaller chopper at a minimum, to put two squads ashore.
The PVC tube, painted red, is the plan for launching trouble bubbles and Firebats. I've not found a piece yet w/ the circumference for the Firebat to fit into. And somehow I plan on using the packaging of the Firebat for a backdrop into the hangar deck. Saves the money of buying that many Firebats and hanging their ordnance on the bulkheads. |

Pic on the right is from the Firebat packaging.
This looks like an awesome project. I am considering making some kind of carrier for the Joes - an amphibious craft may be a cooler idea. And a Submarine for Cobra |

So I've lost some brain cells spray painting the Joe's Amphib flight deck, might be easier if I just rolled it... wonder fi they make any kind of asphalt driveway repair kit you can use a roller on?
Anyway, the first pick is the flight deck w/ the helo's on it. A 5 man SF team boards a Blackhawk while 1SG Duke, 1LT Psyche Out (S-2) and COL Courage (I use him as the Joe's CO, Hawk now being in charge of SOCOM), watch from atop the box filling for the island. I'm planning on 5 level flight deck, w/ a bridge, CIC, briefing room, flight ops, sickbay and armory, maybe a few more compartments squeezed in. For painting I put the flight deck up on three 4 x 4's, and I may leave it their for awhile. I'm not really sure about building below, they don't really need a hangar deck w/ so few helo's, at least not for dio purposes anyway. |
