Inspired by Zoomie's massive aircraft carrier project, I have decided to throw my hat into the good-old diorama ring with, well, my first diorama, and I've chosen to tackle Serpentor's Throne Room.
Now this is my own take on his throne room, not taking anything from any other source (comics, cartoons, etc) and just seeing what I can come up with. I'm designing it with my own collecting habits in mind as well which translates into this being where the executives meet. Serpentor, Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness, Zartan, Major Bludd, Zartan and all the top ranking members from each Viper section would meet in this room for strategy sessions, bitch-fests, the works. I'm building this out of cheap foam board from WalMart (which is about all I can afford) and I really have no idea right now how big this thing is going to wind up being. Right now it looks like it's going to be AT LEAST 30" tall. As for how wide and deep, who's to say. Like most dioramas this is going to be a half-section of my version of Serp's strategy chamber. The floor area is going to have a small, black and white globe in the middle, and all around under alcoves will be colliseum-style seating sections. In the alcoves would be where Crimson Guards are posted in case they need to gun any traitors down. Now since I am going away for Spring Break I won't be able to do much more on this than what I already have done, but before I leave I might as well share what I've accomplished so far and give you an idea of what I am going to do from this point on. First up is one of six alcoves I have currently planned to build (being held up right now by the bench section until the glue cures): Right now it's all in red because, well, that was the foamboard I grabbed (I also have a yellow one too). The entire structure up until the throne section is going to be steel-gray with red felt for padding on the benches (not attached yet to this portion). I'm planning on adding some lighting up in the alcoves, as well as some plants to kind of "warmly civilize" the cold steel. Here is a close-up to the interior of the alcove. I'm going with a sort-of sci-fi look to some of the walls, and for this section, and the door behind the SeeGee, I've gone with some simple posterboard to add a slight layered effect, somewhat mirroring what is in the picture below. I'm using plumber's caulk throughout this project in order to fill in gaps and seal up some corners here and there (it's cheap and I'm no engineering wizard). Here is the base under the alcove and behind where the seating will be. I figured since this would be part of the superstructure it might as well look heavy-duty. The "rivets" are pins that I pushed through the foam, and in the middle square I am going to cut out individual Cobra symbols in posterboard which, once painted over, will hopefully give this nice little embossed look. Anyways, here is where I end my first installment with this thread. As I get more done I will update of course, and with all the freetime I'll have I might take some of the stuff with me just to keep things moving along. |

I use foamboard as well. be careful because ordinary spray paint will dissolve the foam between the paper layers, and it's best to use tackyglue because ordinary white glue will horribly wrinkle the paper on the foamboard: I found that out the hard way. It's a good start, please keep us posted.

acrylic paints, or use tacky glue to glue a second layer of posterboard over the foamboard and use light coats of spray paint.

I've read you can use wood glue that's been watered down a bit to thin it out to coat it before you paint it. It seals it and makes a protective coat. Nice job so far. Did you ever go to the games-workshop site? they use to have great articles on this kinda thing.

Liquid Nailz is the best to use on Foamcore/board, also if you don't have an airbrush, tape the edges of the piece and use hairspray before spraypainting
