BLACK OUT
Black Out is the pinnacle of new sculpt characters, one that not only fit an absent role in the Cobra ranks but could have easily been a RAH character with his intriguing bio. BARREL ROLL If Black Out is the pinnacle of new sculpt characters, Barrel Roll is maybe one of the worst. why? one of the most basic tenets of Joe characters is that their names reflect their specialty. Barrel Roll is a sniper. let me repeat. Barrel Roll is a sniper. what the f#@k does the name Barrel Roll have to do with being a sniper? I know what you are going to say, but he's a high altitude sniper. well, what the f#@k is a high altitude sniper? not to mention, if that's the case, his name has to reflect the sniper aspect as well. Barrel Roll is not only a pilot's name, but his figure looks like a pilot and nothing like a sniper. well done, Hasbro. jackasses. he's only saved by the family conflict in his bio, and even then that is only made interesting by the third family member, as just two brothers on opposite sides would have been pretty boring. had to rewrite his bio to make him primarily a pilot and make sense of his name. BOMBSTRIKE Two parties creates conflict, but three creates real drama. the inclusion of Bombstrike into the Black Out/Barrel Roll conflict saves the Barrel Roll character and makes the entire sub plot one of the cooler side elements of the G.I. Joe story. It also separates her from being more than just another female figure. DEVIL'S DUE GREENSHIRT I was always a fan of the DD Greenshirt design. Although I am not a fan of the idea of a generic infantry unit for G.I. Joe, I do like the idea of the training unit being the main infantry support where potential members earn their way onto the team. SGT. HACKER Poor Sgt. Hacker, he's probably the most irrelevant G.I. Joe ever made. not only would we have all preferred him to be Mainframe when he came out, Hasbro created an entirely new computer character the very next year with Hard Drive, completely abandoning the character. well, I like him. of course, in typical new sculpt era creation, his bio sucks and needed a slight work over. FIREWALL the only people worse at creating characters during the new sculpt era than Hasbro was Devil's Due. while I like the idea of a young kid being skilled enough to be part of the Joes, I don't think the team would ever recruit a kid that would sabotage her classmates grades and ruin her future just because she didn't like her, and hack into government computer systems. call me old fashion, but to be a Joe means not only being dedicated and skilled, but also having impeccable integrity. Devil's Due's Firewall is completely lacking in integrity. To make her work, she needed a complete bio overhaul. not to mention the name Firewall inherently refers to someone who specializes in computer security, not hacking. well done, Devil's Due, way to keep up with the basic aspects of naming characters, it's very difficult. MANGLER Mangler is an interesting character to make because his background is completely wide open so I could make it up myself while fitting it into the parameters of what we do know of the character from his brief appearance. but what's the use of making a dead character, right? well, who says he has to be dead, the Joes never recovered his body and just left it there. he could very well be alive and still not contradict the events of his only appearance. DR. KNOX The fun of this character was coming up with the bio. SHADOW STRIKE Based on the ninja design in the Hasbro sketchbook, more than likely it was probably going to be just another Storm Shadow, but the last thing I need is another Storm Shadow. ROC JINX Had the parts so why not. cut away the hair from the front of Helix's face and draped it down the sides to differentiate the two figures. |

Gunslinger puts out some pure win again.
I especially like your new takes on the new-sculpt-era guys. As you point out, they had a lot of flaws, but the figure ideas themselves translate very well into 25th anniversery style. Great work. as always.. |
