It's good for a first, you will get better with every one you do so keep it up.
The best paints you can use are Testors Model Master acrylics, Tamiya acrylics etc...Testors enamel won't work. When brushes get worn chuck 'em and buy new ones. Always wash the figure in hot soapy water, rinse well and let dry thoroughly before painting. Never try to paint the figure with the intent to finish it in one sitting, I usually do 1 coat and let the figure sit for a day, then repeat 1 or 2 (or 3) times. The first coat may look like crap but don't keep applying more paint, let it sit for a day and repeat 1-3 times (it should take more 2 or 3 days)for best results. Please note, there are other ways/techniques...this is just what works for me.

Furst let me say good job for your first custom.
I find the best paints are the Vallejo Acrylics...over 250 colors, very workable. Here is a pic of my PP Guard. I made him EXACT to the vintage one...hopefully it will help you. My 2 cents...Id get rid of all the red details and you must have the camo stripes...Python Patrols signature

It happens to all of us. lol. Make sure you are using the right size brush for the job and if not, cut the brisles down. Brushes are only 1.40 for like a pack of 3 anyway. Also, it looks like your problem was that you used too much paint and didnt wait for it to dry before painting again or your paint was to dry and needed some thinner. Use only acrylic paints!
