The concept of Helmet Mounted Sights for the targeting of Air-to-Air missiles is rooted from experimental projects from the U.S. Navy in the late 70s and developments by the South African Air Force in the early 80's. The conventional way of acquiring missile lock was to keep the nose of your plane pointed at your opponent. This meant a high degree of situational awareness.
The first of these 'Off-Boresight' Targeting systems came in form of the V3B Kukri Air to Air Missile. Comparable to the AIM-9 Sidewinder it was the first missile able to be locked onto target by simply the turn of the pilot's helmet. Where the pilot's point of view faced...so would the missile. The Pilot no longer needed to keep the nose pointed to the enemy for lock-on. The first employment of helmet targeting was in helicopter guns, the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter, a prime example. With the Advent of the MiG-29 and the SU-27, did we see a resurgence of Off-Boresight Missile Aiming technology in the form of the '#3-UM' for the MiG-29 and the NST-S27 HMS for the SU-27 family. These developments also fast tracked the design and fielding of the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) which will be standard on the F/A-18E/F, F-35, and F/A-22. After taking a trip to a local store I found a Mega-Bloks Skateboarder with a Helmet close enough in profile to be customized into the HMS System for my SU-27K Pilot. It was not as easy as I thought it would be as I really had to drill and carve out the head in order to separate it from the helmet. After some refinements and a little paint... I have made an HMS System for my pilot... Demonstrating today is VVS Air Force Captain Marko Bondarenko капита́н авиа́ции call sign "Polo" Last edited by SuperFlanker; 10-11-2009 at 10:14 PM.. |
