Here is a BIG Tip for custom work.. invest in a really small really high quality brush... you want to use very little paint and its easy to do that with a very small brush.. plus they are great for the detail work.
I get mine at Michael's Arts & Crafts they run around $5-7 depending.

As far as heads, just practice, a quality super fine tip brush and sometimes toothpicks are key, as well as the consistency of the paint. Just practice, it's the best way to figure it out. |

For the eyes, I've been using fine (0.1 to 0.5) point pens. You can find them in black, blue, green, & brown in the stationary department. (& red, but . . . .) Brown is hardest to find, & I've only seen it in a multipack.

you must mean .05. Don't go buying .5s they are as big as the eyes themselves.

I hate painting pupils, I can do it okay if i have too, but it's so nerve wrecking for me. I usually just use liquid masking film to mask the pupils off when i spray paint and airbrush then peel it off when i'm done and the factory pupils are intact.

The more you practice the better you get, and a good fine brush is a must. If you order a head from a place like Broken Arrow, I find it helpful to give it a wash with soap and warm water so the paint adheres better.

The heads he's talking about are cast heads that have no paint on them from the get go... ;)

I recommend a magnifying glass. I always said I'd never use one but it helps you do it right the first time and now I use it religiously. Mine came with my metal armature I use to hold parts that I'm painting and drying.
