Good morning Fellow Tankers,
I'm pleased to report that I am a new owner of a 21st Century used and modified 1/18 Scale Huey Hoghead. It is a vehicle that I have always admired and sought to add to my collection. Good news is that I got a great deal on this. Bad news: I obtained this via ebay from a guy that transformed this into a US Customs helicopter complete with white paint and green water decals. Its also missing cockpit doors. No offense to the customizer (it actually looked pretty good) but I wasn't feelin the US custom's theme and wanted to go a Joe or Cobra themed route. I was marginally successful in removing the decals without too much damage to the paint. (See pic below) So here are my questions: 1) Should I try to remove the white paint and restore to original finish or is that a disaster in the making? 1A) If so what recommendations do folks have to accomplish that 2) Do I touch up the paint where it is chipped and just keep the bird white, adding Cobra or Joe stickers to spice it up? 2A) Can Krylon Fusion be sprayed into a cup and then applied via brush? 3) The Huey is missing the cockpit doors. I realize locating them will be next to impossible. I'm thinking about crafting some out of styrene but will take any advice on better options. |

Looks like the rotor stabilizers, the horizontal stabs and the flight lights are missing, too. I suppose the last 2 are there and just off at the moment.
White's tricky. Only time a Huey looks alright in white is with is with orange and MFO markings, or perhaps some fictional "arctic" camo. I leave that to your discretion. I hear break parts cleaner removes paint pretty well without damaging the plastic like MEK or Acetone. If you're doing a Joe bird be mindful, as you may want to keep the serial number on the tail and United States Army tail boom markings. If you're keeping the white, Fusion in a cup should be possible, as long as it's only small spots. Thinning the paint may be necessary. If you do it i'd like to know how it works, as i've been thinking of that same thing myself. Like i was saying in your thread when you asked about doors, commissioning a set to be cast would be the best bet, though expensive. If you've got the ability, though, making them from scratch could work almost as well. Can't wait to see it done. Just don't paint it blue or crimson. ;) |

hey thanks for the suggestions. I should have indicated that I have the tail rotor and rear stabilizers but they are off at the moment. Missing two top lights over the cargo area on either side-least of my concerns though until I solve my door problem.
I thought about the artic camo route but without those cockpit doors that will be one very chilly bird!!! ;) |

I was thinking maybe you could just leave the doors off, much Like they do on MH-6s, but then i remembered how loud the blade pop on a Huey is.

If it was me i would strip the old paint off. As 1 touch my leave a different shade and i like my paint apps to be smooth. I use pine sol to remove paint, just check on it about ever 20 min and scrub about ever 45 min.

the counterbalance on top of the rotors is broken as well. good luck on the doors, it took me forever to find a huey to replace one my kid was playing with, well, at a reasonable price. I have never spotted any parts for sale.
