Good morning tankers. Finally got a good day, free from distractions and good weather to begin my F-22 custom. I previously removed all stickers using Goo Gone and then washed with warm soapy water. Everything was dry and ready to go. Used a can of Krylon Fusion to provide a good first coat. Will go back next weekend and put another coat on. (By the way, I cannot believe how great this paint works. I know I'm cursing myself for the future but this went on great and looks awesome already.
Two problems: 1) Not too crazy about the flimsy wing tips on this jet. I was originally thinking about epoxying them on so they stay put but now i am flirting with inserting acryllic hinges into the main wing and connecting the wing tips via those hinges so that they are able to fold. Anyone have any experience/pointers/cautionary tales they would like to share? 2) Once I am done with final coats of paint I'm uncertain about two things. A) Should I seal it and if so with what? (Used Krylon Fusion for the paint.) B) should I apply stickers before sprying sealer or after? Sorry no pics yet. Digital camera's on the fritz but will post after my next paint session. |

Also, forgot to mention whether or not my options are limited now that I have painted this. Should I go the epoxy route, I'd like to fill the gap and sand it down so its flush. Then paint over the epoxy. Can I sand the Krylon paint after it has been applied and cured? Can I paint with Krylon Fusion over epoxy?
thanks |

if it was me i would just live with the wings the way they are. most of the time trying to fill gaps that big just doesnt come out right and you can tell that the gaps where filled. but thats just me. if the wings are to loose for your likeing i would put a small amount of super glue on the contact points and be happy with that. but like i said thats if it was me. most people on here use the Green Putty that hobby shops sell. it works pretty good on small gaps. you might want to put it on in layers so that it will cure all the way. the hard part is not sanding away any of the detail of the jet. but the green stuff will hold your wings stiff and its sandable and can be painted. i have pics of my f-22 custom in my profile. i dont think the gaps in the wings affect the look of the jet. it is a toy and not a scale model.

Thanks. I really appreciate the advice. My reasoning for fusing the wingtips to the wing was more for playability-not aesthetics. I think I will go with the super glue option to make the wingtips hold better. I am really pleased with the first coat of paint and don't want to screw it up.
Sadly, I am now addicted to painting vehicles. Once I am done with my F-22 Skystriker, I'm painting an old TTBP that I picked up. After that, my kids better watch out because they may wake up in the AM to see their toys with a fresh new coat of Krylon!!!! |
