Got to thinking today, while looking at all the cool customs. What mak s you stop and reply on a custom?
Is it you want to show support and help others grow? Is it you just like it? Are you following someones work and have just gotten in the habbit of replying to there customs? Me, I look at all the customs, and I reply to the ones that really catch my eye. A really good painting style, a new character, a members own verse. I love Joe and most other toy lines in this scale, but seeing the all new characters and verse customs is what I love the most. Revamped characters in a new style is always pretty cool as well. Now dont get me wrong, I love to see all customs, but the original stuff is by far my favorite. Also how do you like people to crit your work? do you like honest opinions, or do some replys get your blood pressure up? Reason I ask, I find myself saying looks great, very cool, awesome work, and to me it seems I may not be giving enough of a reply. I look at customizing as always growing, never really being the master, just kinda growing and getting better over time. If I post a custom, I want people to really nit pick, I think it helps me grow as a customizer. Now I dont think anybody needs to be a shithead about it, but find away to show the positive and then negative with a suggestion what might work better. anywho, end of the day, just trying to get to know my fellow tanker customizers a lil better. Would love to hear your thoughts, and if I posted in the wrong section, sorry to the staff, I just thought since its geared to customizing, it would fit. Dave |

Personally I always try to respond positively even if I am giving advice on a custom as to how it can be improved.
The reason I respond to as many customs as possible is that I want the hobby to flourish and I know first hand that what inspires us to do more work is the praise we get from other collectors who get what we are doing. I can show my customs to people who know nothing about the hobby and they have no clue what I'm talking about to them my custom looks just like any other action figure and they have no idea what I did. So we are all creatures who need response and attention. Unless something is so absolutely horrible that I cant find anything positive to say I usually say something. Now as to the feedback I like.. well the more meat the better. I do like really great praise that explains why someone likes something.. and I like knowing what is it that others don't like too. Positive criticism is always welcome.

like we talked before, I'm all for the criticism, theres alot of great customizer's here and i respect there opinions and if they think I should do this or that to make it better, than I'm all over it.
If I like someones work, I'll post so, hopefully comment on what i like the best. I try not to add criticism too much, don't want to offend anyone. If its someone new to to it, I'll post more crits, to help out. |

For me, it's the quality of the work, regardless if it is a new version of them or a new character overall that get a radiant response. If it's a simple fix that I have done or have seen, I politely point that out. I make it a point to not be rude, as that does offend people...and no one is perfect.

Zartanman makes a great point, postive responses or encouraging, as long as the person giving the crit, isn't a jackass and posts encouraging and positive advice and the customizer isn't a jackass in accepting the advice as well.
Sometimes Criticism is a matter of personal prefrence. I've had suggestions to do this or that and I and I've left my custom the way it was, simply because thats how I liked it. I think I've come along way from when I first started, but I know I'm along way from where I want to be. so bring on the criticism! Last edited by mswi; 09-06-2009 at 12:37 PM.. |

I think its always good to get in each others head, find what makes us tic and what we can learn from each other. I want to one day, have only customs no product left on my shelves that has not been tweeked in some way. |

I comment if I like the piece, if it shows exceptional customizing skills, if it was a great or new idea or if the creator asks for honest feedback and I have something kind and constructive to add. If I can't think of something nice to say about it I don't post. I confess there are some guys who I am apt to comment on their work because they are firends on here or out of habit, but I generally look at nearly all custom posts.

If I like it, I comment. If I don't like it, I don't. It's that simple.

I hear ya on if you like you comment and if you dont you wont. i can understand this way of thinking also. alot of customs get posted and its damn hard to make a reply to all.
what I was looking to see the most I guess, was who wants to be pushed a lil harder, who take getting better that serious? I know i do, I always t and keep learning new tricks and better steps when casting and molding. And now back to doing customs a lil more often, i would like to keep pushing that envelope a lil further. if you post just to post, like hey look at what i did, thats cool, but you may be somebody who doesnt want to change a thing, when you post the custom, its done. But some are like me, and when somebody points something out I could do better, alot of times i go back and try it out. I would much rather somebody say Hey that looks off, I would have changed up the legs, or is it the angle? or does the shoulders look like they are to big? Thanks for all the comments so far, really cool to see others think about this. Dave |

Most of the time if I see something good or promising, I'll leave a short response to give a little encouragement and the thread a friendly bump.
My response usually gets more elaborate if the custom is more noteworthy. I try to keep criticism to a minimum. Most people seem done with the custom they've posted and probably not interested in going back and working on again. If its a WIP or there's some useful advice I can give that will help their next effort, then I try to do so. If the custom makes me cringe, and I don't have anything good or useful to say I just move along. Again, for the most part, I take a look at all the customs and leave a little positive note to let them know I've stopped by. |
