Breaker is the newest addition to my Stars & Stripes Forever set, where I've added the missing OG13 team members, and upgraded the mediocre ones. This custom also has some Marvel and Classified influences, too.
When I completed Flash and Grand Slam, I didn't provide them with any gear because my approach at the time was more focused on the heads. Once I got the Rock 'n Roll, I added a machine gun for him, because he had to have it. Like Rock 'n Roll, Breaker's gotta have some communication gear. So I pulled back out Flash and gave him a rifle/power source backpack. Grandslam gets a Grunt backpack, just to further distinguish their designs a bit. I like it. It's got a nice mix of familiarity and uniqueness. Great to see Flash getting some attention and the accents to his figure/gear were well done. Each figure looks good, I'll add, and there's some definite creativity and ingenuity on display.
I don't know why, Ripcord's head sculpt reminds me of Red Buttons. |

That sir, is a great looking team! Your Stars and Stripes set is a colorful lot compared to the O13 from ‘82, which kinda fits in nicely with the feel of later Joes. Enjoying noticing all the little things… how nice it is to see Flash and Grand Slam looking more unique compared to one another. I like the details on Breaker, including the backpack. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know why, Ripcord's head sculpt reminds me of Red Buttons. Flash needs a helmet, but there aren't any that fit over that wonderful Tomax (or is it Xamot?) hair, so he just shows off his blonde wave (like Marvel #1 cover). When I read your Red Buttons comment, it horrified me- like you were in my brain. Because I'd also thought the same thing, but didn't think anyone else would even know he was, much less see the similarity. My guess is that it might have to do with him having played a paratrooper in The Longest Day, a movie that the sculptor probably was familiar with. Even scarier, I've recently discovered that the Grunt/Grand Slam head looks like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who would have only been a kid in '82. The Sonic Fighters Zap looks like Clark Cable. I'm sure there are others, but those pop in my head. |

As far as the colorfulness, I've mostly followed the palette that Hasbro showed on the pre-production figures, to give credit where it's due. Scarlett was actually done as a DiC figure (she appeared in a brief non-speaking flashback on a computer screen in those colors). Glad you like Flash vs Grand Slam. I wish I had given Grand Slam boots instead of the baseball pant things, but tossing him a not-Flash backpack is a good compromise. |
