Since I've been collecting (and sometimes customizing) 25A / 50A / Retro Collection Joes, I realized pretty quickly that an official modern Sgt. Slaughter was out of my price range. I went around looking at what options I had for customizing and I realized that one of the Retaliation Roadblock figures already had a black tanktop and camo pants, and since it was based on Dwayne Johnson it had a wrestler's physique (the same sculpt was used for Retro Collection Roadblock with a few minor changes). It does not have movable ankles but I figured that was a small price to pay for a figure that was already close to what I wanted.



The recipe:

Body: Retaliation Roadblock
Head sculpt: MH149 purchased from cobra1678 on eBay
Hands: Light skintone from Marauder Inc
Rifle: M-16-A2 from Marauder
Pistol: DELTA from Maruader
Holster: WWII US: Holster with Flap (BROWN) from Marauder
Belt: WWII US belt and WWII US Rifle Ammo Pouches from Marauder
Swagger stick: purchased bright_tpws on eBay

Anything that was gonna get painted got a good washing with a toothbrush and water with dish soap. For the hat, I painted it with black primer and then gray to prevent any light leaking through. All of the skin got painted with a mix of Citadel Cadian Flesh and white paint to give it a consistent tone. Hair and mustache were painted with Vallejo Dark Olive, and the hat was painted with Rhinox Hide with black around the band and a dot of Retributor Armor and Auruc Armor Gold to brighten it up. The sunglasses were painted in Citadel Mythril Silver, although I found a Mirror Chrome paint pen I bought from Hobby Lobby ages ago and forgot to try out. I gave the glasses a top coat with it after I had sealed the head in varnish. The effect is incredible and I can literally see my reflection in them, I highly recommend giving that pen a try. All the fleshy parts on him got airbrushed with acrylic floor polish and matte varnish.

The belt and holster were inspired by the accessory pack for Classified Slaughter put out by Gridiron Studio. I don't have it yet but I will be picking it up soon. I thought the retro looks of them fit perfectly with Sgt. Slaughter's overall aesthetic. I originally bought an M1911 pistol for him but sadly, I could not get the holster flap to pin close with it even with the hot water trick, so I had to give him the smaller Delta pistol instead. I also had to heat up one of his legs with a hair dryer and pop it off in order to put the belt on, and it wasn't that hard at all. I cut up the belt pouches to get them in the arrangement that I wanted before gluing the pegs in place.

As for the hands, I had to drill into the arms a little to make enough room for the longer Marauder pegs, and use my trick of hot glue with a little SuperLube synthetic grease on the pegs as mold release.

Overall, I'm really happy with how he turned out. He's a big fella standing at about 4.4" tall, the same as Retro Collection Roadblock and Destro. The mirror lenses really give him a premium look too, very similar to the vacu-plate chrome we used to see on toys in the 80s and 90s. He's got a bit more paint on him than most of my other customs but hopefully the seal will prevent too much chipping, and since The Rock's skin tone is only a little darker, any chipping that might happen shouldn't be very noticeable and will be easy to touch up.
