Started collecting Joes recently and wanted to see what they look like with my dry-brushing fetish, lol. These things are harder to paint than I thought! I have a hard time finding the right angle to stroke the figure at so I don't over-do the brushing, hopefully that improves over time.
Anyway, blah blah pics! It's Red Star, repainting his suit because unpainted sculpted details annoy the hell out of me, lol. I can't find any sensible way to make his leg-holster smaller, so I'm just gonna paint it as is. This is what I got done before weariness set in from swimming all day X_X All those little buttons, buckle, and the medal (is that what it is?) are gonna get some paint! Yup, you only dry-brush the top colors though. The black base-color you just slather on because you want to cover plastic's original color. Then you brush the gray on top, then if you want to get all fancy, you get some dark-gray water and wash it onto the figure to help blend the black and grey colors some more.
The belt is a little different, since it's so small, you paint it black, then brown, then give it a wash of black or darker-brown. It's too small to dry-brush comfortably so you can skip that step. The skin isn't painted, I hate painting flesh, lol! |

It's good drybrushing, but with all the inherent flaws of drybrushing because of it. That odd gritty texture apparent in the transitions is what I mean. A glaze of the basecoat would soften that nicely and ease the shift from dark to light. Especially at this scale though, I think drybrush should be reserved for heavily textured surfaces. Generally smooth objects like cloth folds are probably better highlighted with layering, feathering, or wetblends.
Good to see more Fwoosh crossovers here btw. |

Nightmare invades the 'Nam, baby! I mean, Tank, lol. Aw, I kinda wish I wasn't a "Fwoosh crossover", I'm from FigureRealm, but I just haven't been there in forever :[
Thanks for the feedback Sun, I agree with everything you said, but I like the grittiness! I could do some more washes until it all blends smoothly but I hate that "soft" result, softness is the bane of my very being. Joes need hard, rough, spiky, jagged paint-jobs to accentuate their innate bad-assery. Paint-jobs that go out of the lines and don't follow the rules, paint that looks like it could scrape the skin from your fingers! Oops, got carried away, back to painting xD |

Got some more done, this is a lot more fun once you get the hang of how little paint you have to apply, lol. I like how the backpack ended up looking like green leather. Also did a few more washes to make the gray less gritty (damn, lol). I hope to sell it so I might as well make what people want to see xD

For the backpack:
1]Wash/scrub it clean 2]Paint it all black 3]Drybrush the green 4]Paint the straps black again 5]Paint the little buttons and buckles with a tiny brush That's it! The suit is the same process: 1] Paint it black 2] Drybrush it gray 3] The water in your little cup is probably dark gray by now, use that to give the figure a few washes to blend the colors 4] Go back and paint the little details Seriously, not hard, I wish more people would customize! Do it! Do it! :P |
