The first Crimson Guard appeared in Marvel's GI Joe #29. He was introduced as "Smith", not "Fred Broca". The uniform only vaguely resembled the very ornate dress uniform the Crimson Guard figures wore in 1985. Smith wore a red jumpsuit with red gloves. His helmet was a red Cobra Commander helmet with mask lines on it.
I translated the artwork a bit, adding a darker shade of crimson for the gloves and boots, and adding a few touches of slate blue. Last edited by Clockwise; 06-03-2021 at 07:28 PM.. |

I was never into the comics, so I didn't know about this. Thanks for the education!

Helmet reminds me of a vintage Bioroid Terminator - I like the artistic liberties. The original suit design would've realistically gone through several iterations anyway. And I remember the CGs introduction in the comics, very cool to see a custom of the OG CG. I think I made a custom of the red and black striped suit inspired by this very same panel but I don't know if I even still have pics of it.

I vividly remember those three panels but I guess over time my memory just associated the images with being Fred. I probably haven’t read the issue in 35 years. Maybe I need to re read them. I have the entire run in IDW trade.

Thanks, all.
Marvel did what they could without having designs, I guess. During the CGs' first field outing (at a carnival, if I remember correctly), they were drawn wearing HISS tank driver uniforms. I believe Smith became Fred Broca, and that the introduction as Smith was just ignored after the initial appearance. I remember the Robotech line. It's a shame they couldn't be easily taken apart and used for customizing. I have a few scraps of Robotech figures here and there. Should probably integrate them into customs. When painting the Indy head, I was really impressed with how the solid the actual sculpt was, and by how badly Hasbro's paint job butchered it. |

Awesome! Did a great job going from the starting figure to your finished product. Captured the look of the comic perfectly and love the coloring.
Got a bit of a history lesson as well because I forgot about this look for the Crimson Guards. Well done, always fun to hear random Joe facts that I missed / forgotten over the years.
