HISS Tank (classic style High Speed Sentry)
“The HISS tank series has become a hallmark of Cobra ground forces. Despite its high silhouette and other design limitations, the HISS tank never goes out of style. So much so that Cobra has brought back earlier models that had been retired years ago despite the development of improved designs. These original HISS tanks date back to the Cobra’s very beginnings, and are known to be faster than their better-protected successors – making them well suited for scouting and forward battlefield security. Is the move to bring back these old, arguably outdated combat vehicles to bulk up Cobra ground forces an action of desperation or overconfidence? Some of the Joes may scoff at 1st generation HISS tanks, but Cobra now fields even more armored vehicles than before. And that’s a reason to be very worried.” HISS Tank - Classic design by Magnus-L, on Flickr HISS Tank - Classic design by Magnus-L, on Flickr The first vehicle I ever built for Cobra was my upgraded Hiss Tank – almost nine years ago (on the right, below). I wanted to improve upon an obviously limited design and I’m still really happy with how my original upgraded HISS came out. I’ve built a number of different HISS variants since. HISS Tank original and upgraded HISS Tank by Magnus-L, on Flickr For my classic HISS, (on the left, above) I wanted to have a go at something very close to the original early '80s design, complete with just two roadwheels, no top protection for the gunner, etc. This classic take on the HISS is also designed to be easier for me to produce in quantity – it’s less parts intensive and fairly easy to create multiples of. I’ve intentionally mixed two shades of gray here to represent an older patched- up vehicle being brought back from storage to bulk up Cobra’s line units. Desert HISS Tank Cobra's Desert Scorpions make good use of the original HISS Tank, with its wide tracks that give extra traction on sand and uneven ground. Its long tentacles reach into the deepest jungle environments, where its HISS Tanks take advantage of their height to ford rivers. This particular HISS has been crudely modified with an extended hull, giving a limited troop compartment.
