This figure was one of my favorites in the original Adventure People line, sharing most of its sculpt with Brad, who probably was my favorite Adventure Person (he's coming up next). Marauder has a head that matched perfectly, and from there it was all about finding the right body.
I was quite pleased to find the Storm Shadow (v33) body, which had a perfect collar for Steve's leather jacket, and some other details I liked as well (such as a built-in leg holster). Aside from the head and weapons, this is a straight-up repaint of Storm Shadow. Here's a side-by-side comparison between my version and the original Fisher Price Adventure People figure. The biggest problem with this, and it's enough to almost make me want to re-do the entire figure, is that the base Storm Shadow body has "normal" pants that go all the way down to the shoes, leaving no room for the white sock above Steve's boots. I didn't mind the gloved hands--this dude is a Mountain Climber, after all--but those socks mean that one of the main colors on the original figure isn't even represented here, which still bugs me. Happily, I rolled into Steve's doppelganger, Brad, right after this. I managed to fix the issue for Brad (as I'll show next), but we're all just going to have to imagine that he's wearing white socks under his pants. I promise they're there... Anyway, here's Steve next to the raw Storm Shadow sculpt, for comparison purposes. As ever, customizing is an ongoing learning experience. Even though I think Steve looks really cool (both my version and the original), I have a lot more sentimental connection to Brad. I'm happy I did this one first, because it led to my most complex and favorite custom to date... |

My fourth custom in this series, Explorer Brad, is probably the highlight of the bunch for me so far. As a little kid, Brad (whose name I did not know) reminded me of my grandpa, so he always stuck around a little longer than the other Adventure People and I still feel affection for him every time I look at his original sculpt.
I wanted Brad to be very special, because the original figure had been so special to me. To this end, I spent extra time to perfect him, and loaded him with more gear than any of my previous Adventure People. Here's how he turned out. The addition of a beautiful JoyToy backpack really helped to add some dimensionality to the figure and further sell the "outdoorsman" element of Brad's concept. I'm very pleased by how well the backpack rounded out the figure. It's the only thing on this figure other than the canteen and the lantern that doesn't have any paint on it. Here's his right profile, with a nice view of his Playmobil lantern. Between the head, backpack, body, axe, and lantern, this figure has parts from 5 different toy lines. The axe is from the OG ARAH bivouac camp set. It is SO THICK I cannot possibly believe it fit into the hands of any of the original GI Joes. How many thumbs snapped off trying to fit this monster into brittle 1983 plastic hands, I wonder? Probably a lot. Anyway, it's perfect for Brad, thanks to modern GI Joe hands. Here's the comparison to the original Fisher Price Adventure Person. Brad came as a carded figure and with the Northwoods Trailblazer jeep/canoe playset released in 1977 (which is where I got him). Except for the head, the original Brad figure shares the exact same construction as Mountain Climber Steve, who I posted above. The Storm Shadow (v33) body was ideal to capture the leather jacket detail, but Storm Shadow's pants go all the way down to the shoes, whereas both Steve and Brad have tall boots with a bit of sock showing above. (Some folks think this is more like rolled up pant hems, but then why would Brad's be yellow?). When I posted Steve to the Facebook Marauder group, somebody's kid instantly recognized that Steve lacked this element. Ordinarily that wouldn't bother me too much--these are re-interpretations, after all--but that sock is an important part of each figure's color palate, and even though Steve was my favorite Adventure Person conversion of the first three, I started regretting the lack of socks immediately after finishing him. I don't like living with regrets, so for Brad--my grandpa, remember!--I had to get it right. It was about this time that I started to better understand the construction of modern GI Joes, including how to swap parts. With a little work, I managed to swap the bottoms of Storm Shadow's legs with those of an old Ripcord figure I picked up in a loose lot, and the boot/pants leg problem solved itself. Only one challenge remained--Ripcord's legs didn't have any socks above the boot edge! Happily, I've been collecting and amassing little gaming figurines and the supplies to manipulate and paint them for decades, so I dusted off some modeling putty and extended the "lip" already sculpted into the top of the boot across the front. With putty in hand, I took the opportunity to unscrew the built-in holster on the right leg and fill the resulting hole. This left room for the holster built into Kwinn's belt. I'm very pleased by how this turned out, and I think it was critical to pulling off the best-possible rendition of Brad! I finished this figure--still my favorite custom of the bunch--with a great deal more understanding of how to modify and customize modern Joes. My satisfaction with how Brad turned out (along with my surprise that I was able to credibly free-hand the complex hydra logo on the Frogman and Rescue Pilot) gave me the courage to move on to the most intimidating challenge of this entire project... ...THE CYCLE RACING TEAM! BRAD RECIPE Head: Marauder Ivan Body: Storm Shadow (v33) Bottom Legs: Ripcord (v5) Hands: Kwinn (v2) Belt: Kwinn (v2) Axe: ARAH Bivouac Camp Set Lantern: Playmobil Backpack: JoyToy (not sure which set, got it loose on eBay) |

Loving this project already! Great job on the builds and the paint jobs!
My favorite pics are the Past & Present ones. I usually do them for my customs because I love seeing the originals along with my updates so for a line that I’m not as familiar with like Adventure People, they are invaluable. Ton of personality in those original figures so I can see why you have fond memories of them. You are definitely doing them justice with your updates so keep up the great work!

This is a great tour of both adventure people (they are coming back to me) and your work. Freehand painting the octopus (not easy), parts choice, and paint, those boots - nicely done. I’ll be back to see the cycling team. Welcome to the Tank! I hope you stick around!
