Great stuff as always! Okay...I want to emulate your Dusty build. Can to tell me where his havelock comes from and how did you attach it? I’ve been wanting to do a Dusty too, but I’ve resisted cuz of the havelock.

Thanks, I initially built the figure and it looked a bit "meh", but I recently went back and tweaked a few bits and think it looks much better now.

Thanks, love your Falcon, I was going to show mine in this thread but it looks rubbish next to yours. It was my first attempt at Tiger Stripes also but did not come out nearly as well. |

I must admit I had to look up what a Havelock was! I had a pair of desert camo shorts which got a rip in them. I was going to throw them away but decided in the end to cut them up. I used a small strip of that material and attached it to the helmet using double sided sticky tape. I have considered cutting up a Japanese hat from the WW2 wave and trying to attach that but I am happy for the moment with how it is. I was hoping the Desert Rats (as well as the Afrika Korps and Paratroopers) would have funded.

That’s a great Dusty! The 25th version definitely needed an upgrade.

I keep coming back to this thread every day for ideas because I'm slowly but surely changing a lot of my Joe customs over to MTF bodies.
So, let's go back to your Doc. Did you paint the legs also? And do you top the paint off with any kind of sealer/coat? Your Doc figure's torso appears to have a slight sheen that matches the pants. Great work and keep the customs coming! Jason |

So, let's go back to your Doc. Did you paint the legs also? And do you top the paint off with any kind of sealer/coat? Your Doc figure's torso appears to have a slight sheen that matches the pants. Great work and keep the customs coming! Jason All of Doc is painted, I was disappointed that the tan arm colour did not match the tan legs, but then neither did the vintage helmet. I had to paint the torso anyway as that is not available in tan (yet) so once I had painted that (which I think is a mix of Army Painter Desert Yellow and Vallejo Iraqi Sand) I slightly watered down my paint mix and applied a light coat to the legs and arms. The idea was to blend the colours rather than totally paint the parts as I don't like painting over the shoulder, elbow and knee joints. Once this had dried I applied a coat of Army Painter Soft Tone Quickshade, I don't tend to use quickshade on my GI Joe customs but the thinking was that if it was not one solid colour then if any scratches or chips did occur then it wouldn't be so obvious as the colour underneath was a close matching tan anyway. I then applied the decals followed by a coat of decal fix. When that had dried I gave all the parts a light spray of Army Painter Satin Varnish. I prefer satin for whole figures, but do use gloss and matte also for individual parts depending on what effect I am going for. I then put the parts aside for 2 days (waiting is the hardest part) before assembling the figure. It doesn't say to leave for 2 days, that is just my rule, the figure will be touch dry in about 30 mins. |
