When I was young I loved playing with scale 1:72 figures and playsets made by the British company Airfix. One of them was the Fort Sahara with Arabs and French foreign legionnaires. The Airfix toys were of poor quality but cheap and that was more important. As I am at home now due to the Coronavirus epidemic, I built Fort Sahara at scale 1:18. The diorama as a whole is 5 meters wide, between 50cm and 80cm deep and 70cm high. The Fort is 120 cm wide and 75 cm deep. The tower has a height of ca. 60 cm while the walls are 28 cm tall. As I do not have figures of foreign legion soldiers in classic uniform, I used some Chap Mei figures that look a little bit like a kind of colonial soldiers. The time line is supposed to be the 1930s. It shows a colonial fort with soldiers and a group of archaeologists returned from a site, indigenous tribes and Arabs kindly asking to return the loot and two archeologists captured. The other figures are in part also Chap Mei, besides figures from the Indiana Jones line, GI Joe, Atlantis as well as one lady of the Thunderbird Cats. The indigenous warriors attacking are Chap Mei, (Wild Quest series), leopard men of the 1995 Tarzan line produced by Trendmasters and GI Joe. The total of figures amount to about 120. The vehicles are a Jeep of the 2008 Indiana Jones series (Hasbro) with a scratch-built trailer. The motorcycle is a Maisto model of the 1936 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. The green car originally was a 1935 Ford pickup made by Solido. I bought it totally busted up, made a cargo platform, a chassis and placed Burago wheels. Behind that pickup, there is a Citroen 15 CV of Maisto. That Citroen was produced from1934 through 1952 and therefore fits into the diorama. The canon is a Chap Mei toy. The black car with tractor wheels is a customized version of the 1932 Ford coupé (Yat Ming model). The truck passing through the entrance is of the Indiana Jones series produced by Hasbro in 2008 and the field kitchen is entirely scratch-build. I have made all buildings of discarded Isoform packing material.
Due to limitations of capacity for pictures, here are only two small photos. A full set of 58 pictures you can find on my blog Dioramas 1:18 |
