So, this project is inspired by Barty based on this thread:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...tial-joes.html Whether the customs are good or not is up to you, but I had a lot of fun building these characters based off nothing but a codename. The backstory for these guys is that they ultimately didn't make the Joe team after their efforts in Issue 82. But Lt. Falcon, after his experience in the Slaughter House and his shortcomings as an administrator in `87 leading to the freeing of Serpentor by agents of Cobra-La, developed a new appreciation for the value of non-combat personnel, and the ideology that the fight is won before the battlefield. As such, he drafted these guys into a special unit that specializes in non-combat support roles.

"Jodie":
Jodie was born the son of a self-made wealthy venture-capitalist, who prided himself on the generational wealth he accrued. As such, he found it more important to cultivate his son as a marketing tool and company figure head. Despite Jodie's ivy league education and business savvy, his father still preferred to put him in paper positions within his companies where he was more likely to be on camera than in a boardroom. Jodie found this unrewarding from the start, and was ultimately propelled to help others instead of aiding his father in accruing wealth for himself. He joined the Air Force, where he quickly became an ace pilot, while also building on his pre-medicine education. Allowed to loose his potential unbridled, Jodie quickly impressed his superiors, all the while maintaining his natural charisma and charm- leading others to joke that between his good looks and money, he could steal anyone's girl, thus earning him the nickname "Jodie", much to his chagrin. However, his efforts to be recruited by Joe team were cut short when he had to withdraw from consideration when his father died. Falcon ultimate saw the value in a businessman with international influence, and brought him into his unit. Jodie maintains the public face of a billionaire heir, which allows him to rub elbows with some of the world's most powerful people, and gain access to places reserved for only the most wealthy and affluential, all while exuding the persona of a fun-loving socialite; and keeping all unaware of his affiliation with Joe team. It's also handy to have someone who can smuggle in teammates under the guise of his "entourage" where most won't bat a suspicious eye to his coming and going.

"Desperado"
Born and raised in a small town along the Mexican-American border, Desperado lost his father at a young age. The circumstances of his father's disappearance and presumed death were somewhat of a mystery. Desperado's mother insisted that his father had been a Federal Agent working deep cover amongst a powerful cartel, and was not actually dead, but in hiding. As Desperado grew older, other children would joke that his father was nothing but a low level loser working for the cartel who finally had his ticket punched for some mess-up or another. Though Desperado rejected these insults as cruelty, the thought grew in the back of his mind, and when he was 16, he left school and began traveling along the border in search of information about his father. By the time he was 18, he found himself an admired member of the same cartel he expected to have killed his father, while in his own mind he was conducting deep cover operations like his father before him. The details thereafter get hazy. Desperado enlisted in the Army at 20, and the years prior are still a mystery. The belief is that perhaps he found his father's killer, exacted his revenge, and is now on the run- or maybe he found himself in so deep the military was the only way he thought he could escape. Nonetheless, he was an outstanding combatant and survivalist, and ultimately made his way through Ranger school, and was subsequently recommended for Joe team by Beachhead. While he tested with exemplary skill in qualifications, his aloof nature and unwillingness to talk about himself made it difficult for him to create any bonds with the other cadets, and he became somewhat of an outsider. Perhaps it was something in that past, but Duke ultimately decided that despite Desperado's skill, he seemed quick to anger and even more concerning, quick to trigger. Considered too unpredicatable to be trusted in the field, Desperado didn't make the cut. But Falcon saw that Desperado's years along the border made him an excellent ranger, and gave him an ability to go deep into enemy territory unnoticed and undetected, making him an outstanding one-man recon team. As long as he can be kept away from a fight, he's able to obtain lots of information about enemy terrain and local politics, all the while passing through as a nameless drifter.

“Funky”
-Nicknamed “Funkytown” (which was affectionately shortened to “Funky”) due to his love of dancing, especially break-dancing, Funky was on an upward trajectory as a performance artist at an early age. And though his dance skills continued to grow, he did not. After several years of losing out auditions to taller, even if less talented dancers, Funky eventually caught the eye of a premiere dance company who brought him on as an instructor and choreographer. As he continued to develop the next generation of dancers, he also began involving himself in the production side of show business. In an effort to make the old seem new again, Funky heavily utilized modern theatrics so his dance company’s productions would stand apart. These commonly included elaborate pyrotechnic displays and devices. Working with the pyrotechnicians, Funky also began developing an interest in explosives. And though he loved training dancers, in the end, he still longed to be a performer himself. Knowing that wasn’t to be, he pursued his new interest in explosives, starting as a special agent with the ATF, where he eventually became and EEO before being reassigned to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, having both an advanced knowledge of explosives and a natural disposition for instruction. Again feeling he had been put on the sidelines, Funky began his journey to qualify for Joe team. Despite his expertise in explosives and exceptional athleticism as a fighter, Funky was ultimately edged out by Lightfoot as an explosives expert. Funky himself had expected as much, having stated that although indistinguishable to most, it was clear to him that Lightfoot was the superior explosives expert. Hawk didn’t make that determination until the last day. Despite not being Funky’s true passion, Falcon could plainly see that he had an eye for talent, and just as he had at his dance company, Funky could help identify and mold tomorrow’s Joes. Funky now serves as a premiere recruiter, finding prospects across the world and from multiple disciplines and professions to enhance Joe’s ranks, though he hasn’t given up on his own desire to one day serve on the main roster.

“Bad News”
Bad News wanted to be an investigative journalist for as long as he could remember. He was born fearless, sometimes to the point of wrecklessness. Having no money for college, he joined the Navy in hopes of having his college education paid for, but not after he got a chance to see as much of the world as he could. After the experience of his first enlistment, he lost taste for sitting in a classroom all day, when the real learning was done in the real world. Already handy with computers and electronics, he decided to skip college and got a job with an international news crew as an equipment technician, spenind his nights in foreign locations getting the real pulse of the story-meeting locals, traveling off the beaten path, and hearing everything people cared to mutter. It was through several “deep dives” on these travels that he learned about Joe team, and his interest piqued. Despite being offered a job as a reporter, he decided to re-enlist and continue his martial training, and ultimately graduated as a SEAL. Feeling equipped with the skills he needed to make Joe team, he kept his ear to the ground, this time using word on the street to find his way into a poker game with Joe member SHIPWRECK. After cleaning Shipwreck out, Bad News agreed to forgive the debt for a chance to be on Joe team. The self-proclaimed “King of Scuttlebutt”, Bad News controlled the gossip around Joe camp, and his knowledge of what tests were coming next made him rather popular among the other cadets. Unfortunately, his curiosity got the best of him, and chasing information on Joe team members ultimately led him to a local bar, where Snow Job goaded him into a drinking contest in exchange for information. When Bad News came to in the back of Snow Job’s jeep, he’d already missed a day of training and Hawk has a pretty strict one-strike policy. But Falcon isn’t quite so strict, and would be somewhat of a hypocrite if he didn’t forgive the occasional screw-up here and there. Bad News’ ability to put himself in the heart of a locality, obtain information, and read the pulse of the people was far too valuable to throw away over an ill-advised decision to tip glasses with a member of Joe team. That, coupled with his skills as an electronic and electrical engineer, made him valuable as a surveillance consultant, as well. Design note: Bad News' original design ended up looking too much like Hawk, so I played with the color pallet and, drawing influence from movies set in the 20s where newspapers still mattered, I ended up with what is basically the Rocketeer/Launchpad McQuack.

Blister:
Blister was a born outdoorsman. With a natural love of hiking, rock-climbing, and surfing, he was never going to get stuck behind a desk. Blister traveled the world and competing on-and-off professionally in a number of such sports, in the end the taste of competition didn’t suit him, and he returned to California to work as an instructor, often providing his services to amateurs and tourists from around the world, often enthralled by the life experiences of others. Affectionately referred to as Blister by his students, due to his overly calloused hands, he quickly became a well-renowned instructor. Soon, he began running his own training camps, but never stopped trying to perfect his own craft in the process. Through this, he crossed paths with GI Joe member ALPINE. Alpine’s climbing abilities were beyond anything Blister had ever seen; likewise, Alpine had never seen such ability as Blister’s to evaluate a terrain or trek, and form an action plan to be appropriately equipped for all eventualities. As their friendship developed, Blister couldn’t help but be intrigued by Alpine’s work as in the military (making no mention of Joe team, of course). Wondering if he himself could do more for the world, Blister left his school in the care of his hand-picked instructors, and enlisted in the Army. His friendship with Alpine continued, and tracking his friend’s progress, Alpine managed to get Blister a spot in Joe team qualifications. Surprisingly, Blister struggled with some of the PT, as exercise for exercise’s sake didn’t suit him, he was ultimate placed in reserve status. Falcon was less interested in his physical abilities, and more interested in his keen eye for climate and terrain, and the ability to equip a team going into prescribed conditions. When Desperado comes back with the information, Blister is the guy who knows how to gear up the deploying squad for any eventuality, over any stretch of land, and in any weather conditions.

“Ice Pick”
The son of a working class contractor, Ice Pick was raised on two primary philosophies- any job worth doing it worth doing right, and in order to do the job right, you have to have the right tool. But just as equally valuable to Ice Pick’s upbringing was learning that the right tool wasn’t always available and sometimes you just had to make do. As such, Ice Pick’s resourcefulness made him a strong asset when he entered the construction business with his father. But when the real estate market crashed and the work dried up, Ice Pick also came to realize that for some jobs, money was the only tool that would do. Deciding the join the Army has a stop gap measure during the recession, and much to the pride of his father, Ice Pick quickly found a knack for armory and equipment. He excelled at finding the best tool for a given job, from the caliber of a firearm down to the size of a screwdriver. It became a favorite pastime of fellow soldiers to propose a job to Ice Pick and have him explain the proper tools- queries include anything from countering zombie attacks all the way to space missions. When one of these questions turned back around to what the best weapon is for maximum casualties to enemies, his reply was “In the right hands, an ice pick is as deadly as any gun”. He became “Ice Pick” from that day forward, and unfortunately, all the way into Joe team qualifications. On the cusp of making the cut, his somewhat misleading nickname saw him released from consideration when it was realized he was an armorer and not a cold weather expert. It also didn’t help that Ice Pick was a doer, and hours of film study in class challenged his consciousness leading to poor scores in his written assessments. Luckily for Ice Pick, Falcon had use for a good weapons and tool man. Ice Pick is the go to armorer for special missions, and can even tell you the best snacks to pack on a long plane ride into enemy territory.

“No Show”
Despite graduating with honors from a premiere law school, No Show realized early on that he was destined to be the man behind the man. That man was his older brother, who was elected to a State Senate office, with No Show as his campaign manager. As his brother wanted to move on to bigger and better opportunities, No Show realized that politics, like most facets of life, was all about controlling information. As such, he formed a network of informants and investigators, and ran operations from convincing local PACs to support his brother all the way to blackmailing potential threats to the campaign’s success, thinking along the way that righteous people didn’t have secrets. He was dubbed “No Show” by his associates, due to his targets having a habit of disappearing for awhile after a meeting with him. And he did so effectively, as his brother was eventually elected Governor. Wanting to distance himself from some the more questionable tactics that had been used in his name, Governor Brother dismissed No Show from his gubernatorial staff. It wasn’t until then that No Show took stock of some of the actions he had taken, realizing that he had hurt good men in the process, and perhaps a man who would ask him to do those things such as his brother had, was not a good man himself. This crisis of conscience culminated when No Show enlisted in the military and ultimately went on to serve as a member of the JAG Corps. Having helped General Hawk get out of an administrative jam or two brought him to the attention of Joe team. His attempt to qualify was ultimately cut short when he resigned as some of his brother’s mis-dealings began coming to light. Although No Show was very honest about his involvement with his brother’s elections, Falcon saw the value in someone with his skill set. No Show excels at identifying those with vulnerabilities that may make them susceptible to being seduced by Cobra, and can use that knowledge to turn a would-be adversary into an asset of the United States and Joe team. No Show was all too eager to use his skills when he knew terrorists and murderers would be among his targets. It’s also handy having a legal expert available to advise Hawk on his dealings with the Jugglers. And in the most dire of cases, No Show is still a soldier, and isn’t afraid to pull the trigger if there’s no other recourse in the face of global security.

I'm so excited for these customs! Great start already. Looks like Jodie is not only international but also intergalactic. Tell him not to stand too close to Jabba's throne. Isn't the Rancor pit right that?
