I love the Dragonhawk. This is yet another cool item to come out of the strange DTC / Sigma Six era where the scale of the figures was in flux, and certain vehicles seemed to be as appropriate for the 3.75 inch Joes as the 2.5 inch style they were intended for. The Sigma Six Dragonhawk has been a popular vehicle for customizing, given its awesome modern design, cool gimmicks, and play value.
I originally modified my Dragonhawk to fit the DTC and Valor vs Venom figures of the time, but with my collection focused on the post 25th Anniversary era, I needed to update the Dragonhawk cockpit to accomodate the slightly larger, and differently articulated new figures. I chose the Toys R Us Air Command Wild Bill, whose color scheme matches the Dragonhawk perfectly, as the pilot. The next step was to gut the cockpit. In my earlier mod, I cut out the front bulkhead in the cabin area to allow more "leg room". If you do this, take care not to cut the wire that leads to the LED in the front vulcan gun. I then set about creating new panel and seat inserts. These pieces were cut from sheet styrene (both flat, and ribbed for the seatbacks). I tried to keep these pieces as shallow and minimal as possible, allowing for maximum room for the 25th style figures. I made a floor panel, pilot seat back, passenger seat back / rear cockpit panel, and new HUD for Wild Bill. This piece was created using the original front HUD, cut down and resculpted with Milliput to fit a new sticker--which you may recognize from the Armadillo! This was purchased from Cobrastickers.com, and makes for an excellent aircraft instrument panel. The yolks / joysticks are GI Joe knife handles! I realized that I had a ton of these from the V vs V figures. There are two in front, and also two in back (which are not visible in the photos). The completed cockpit inserts were painted flat black. I then glued them in place with super glue. Be sparing if you use super glue--I would actually recommend epoxy instead if you are accustomed to working with it. To finish off the Dragonhawk, I added extra decals from Cobrastickers to complete that classic GI Joe look. My favorite thing about this new customization isn't the Dragonhawk, but the extra piece I built for use with the magnetic docking system. A special piece was originally utilized to clip onto the Sigma Six Night Ops Vamp. I took one of these pieces, and screwed it down to a Cobra Stinger roof panel and--yeah! I now had a docking system that would snap down onto an original 80s design VAMP! If you remove the clips that are designed to snap into the Night Ops Vamp roof, you get plenty of clearance for the 25th Anniversary VAMP Mk 1's guns. The docking piece slides backward into place, then you snap it down to the roll bar, and it fits perfectly between the guns. The screws that hold together the docking element are not long enough to go through the Stinger roof panel, so I used some that are slightly longer. But screwed into place, it's certainly strong enough to hold the VAMP. Hope you enjoyed my breakdown on how I modded my Dragonhawk for the modern era Joes! Let me know if you have any questions. -Greg Last edited by denversaur; 07-06-2010 at 08:16 PM.. |

Awesome pilot controls.Consider that copied. As for the magnetic top on the vamp, interesting.Personally I`d have embedded into the roof itself,so it`s an instant field lift capable.Tho in the real worl anything slung under a helo has to be prepped,so works on that lvl too.
Most excellent mods. |

cool! I always love seeing what people do with the dragon hawk. I think that's possibly my favorite vehicle from any joe line next to the stinger or vamp, and the dragon fly helicopter. No dramatic changes but you made it funtional and fit into the 25th line really well. Makes me wish I had one now. Maybe I'll scour the bay when I get home to see what I can find.
