Glad to see that I am not the only one that has discovered papercraft models as a resource for produced toys/models and diorama accessories. I have been searching for an inexpensive Hawkeye E-2C. I found a model kit in England that was a vacuum mold for RC planes and almost spent $75 plus shipping for a 1/32 scale model. Then I came across papercrafting sight that had a free model of a E-2 at 1/68 scale. I used Photoshop to upscale it to 1/32 and printed out the pages (the wings alone needed to be on 11x17 sheets) on .5mm card stock. Not only I had fun putting it together, the cost alone was only $10.00 in materials and the printing services at Office Max. Since then, I found a Phalanx CIWS model for my destroyer project, a Aircraft Carrier MD-3 Deck Tractor for my USS FLAGG, and some air craft support generators and accessories.
One thing I am have notice, there are multiple scales used in making the toy line. The air craft is mostly 1/32 scale and the ground vehicles can very between 1/24 to 1/17 scale. I am having to find the balance of what is aesthetically looking next to the figures and still have some function. For example, today I am tweaking a carrier deck generator unit that the model was originally at 1/50 scale. I tried the 1/17 scale to fit with the 4" figures and when put on the deck, it looked too big. My next step is to print out a 1/32 scale version and build it to see how it will fit next to the aircraft and the figure. If it is too small, then I know I need to adjust the scale to either 1/24 or 1/20 scale. Anyways, this is a great thread you started, and I hope this will catch on more as it is a way affordable means to build props and accessories for our figures and play sets. PS: I was intrigue by the idea of using the paper craft models as a template to be cut out of styrene sheets. Question, how would one handle curves and bends to the sheets, would a simple hair drier be enough or does one need to invest in a heat gun? Could the boiling water trick work?

You need to find a way to hold the styrene to the curve shape you want when it's hot though . |
