Retro Roadblock Play:
Tried a two new things over the last few weeks with my Wal-Mart Retro Roadblock. The headless body (head went to my T13 Roadblock), has been lying around with nowhere to go. The first thing was a test idea requested by Joe90, asking how the Resolute Roadblock legs looked with the Retro Roadblock body. Seemed like a really good idea—the upper legs are really bulky, the knees and feet have better articulation, and upon further review, the pants color is a very good match (surprising good, considering around a 10-year difference in production/release). I had never taken apart my only Resolute RB, and actually had trouble getting the legs off the t-joint pegs (tightness). Then, when trying to get those Resolute legs on the Retro torso, the legs wouldn’t fit at all (tightness). Having cracked my Resolute Scarlett legs early this year, I wasn’t about to break another +$40 Resolute figure. I was almost resigned to tell Joe90 it was a no go—but the color match was so good, I figured I find out what it took to make it work. Turns out that sanding down the inside of the inner leg half and the top of both leg halves did the trick. I had to use a heavy grit to work it done well enough, and I may have also had to shave down the inner leg at the bottom of the slot. 2020-11-13_10-30-30 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr You’ll notice that the pant color is painted onto the mold—the mold is not cast that tan/orange color. The leg is molded in brown, which I knew beforehand by looking at the inside of the leg pieces. So to make this work, the sanding and cutting work will have to be carefully restricted to areas that won’t be visible when assembled to the torso. This is ok, since the areas that clash are all hidden from view anyway. The fit is still tight, but I got it to a point where I didn’t fear breakage. 20201113_203523~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above is test shot of the build, Retro RB torso arms, vest and torso with the Resolute RB legs, with no custom repainting. The head above is from the ROC version, and obviously the skin color is way off. The Resolute RB head color is also way off, being much darker than all the RB’s. Below, the skin was painted with a blend of Testors Leather and Testors Burnt Umber. You can paint yours any brown hue (I went darker as a nod to my original Resolute, and to get color separation from the pants). I would suggest trying to blend close to the Retro’s brown—need not be exact, just enough to where joints with paint rub don’t look so off. 20201113_212135~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above is my real quick repaint. I think I like this enough, that it will be my new Roadblock for my Resolute Set display—it has much better sculpting for the arms and torso. One other important note: the head is meant to fit on a much taller neck sculpt, so you’ll have to add some clay/tack or your choice filler to get the head to sit at the correct height. Also may need to further mod the head so he’s not always looking up (in the pic above, I did minor work but not enough). WEB HARNESS: The second thing I’ve been playing with is using the MTF modular webgear to replace the vest. The gear is longer than the 25th gear and sits lower on the torso, but still sits above the molded belt resulting in a double belt look. I did my best to thin out the webgear mold (mostly at top, but also front and back), whittling it down with an exacto knife. I also whittled down the molded shirt straps on the torso to get the belt lower. Results are below—just enough belt overlap to call good for now, but I expect to keep working on it, probably will see if I can lower the shoulders with more whittling. 20201113_203138~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above was taken prior to repainting the skin. And when I repainted the skin, I was pretty sloppy around the shirt edges. Since he will be wearing the vest for shelf display, I was too lazy to clean up the overpaint. Instead, see below for a pic with the color drained out for a better idea of the concept build: 20201113_203138~3 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I hope you all are finding these Retro figures. I haven’t seen them on the shelves for the last two weeks since finding them in October. I do expect to see a bunch of these in the next few months, and I hope RB and Destro don’t clog the shelves while I try to find at least one more Scarlett. So I’m looking for ideas to encourage regular clearing the pegs of RB and Destro—both for myself and for others. PhotoGrid_1605325474583 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Great choice with the legs, and great paint work again!!! That combo of that torso and legs really improves the Resolute build!!! What did you do with the Retro (classified) head?
EDIT: Duh. I just saw the link. Nice!!!

HHFF, used the MTF web gear on my RB. I carved the underside of the top of the straps to almost paper thin and then glued them to the torso where I wanted them, then stretched the belt down where I wanted it on the waist and glued it there. It’s permanent now, of course, but I didn’t glue the rest of the straps and the figure retains full range of motion in the torso.

Right now I only have the one webgear, bought from one of those Covid assembled figures a few months ago, to start messing with MTF parts & pieces. Once the test fix is a slam dunk (I don't like the belt side pouches sticking out), I'll go ahead and order more. Thanks for sharing your mods! Quote:
PhotoGrid_1605325474583 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr No painting was done except for the skin on the fourth above. If you look closely at all of them, see the upper left leg just below the torso hip, where you see I oversanded the leg paint. The colors on Retro RB are extremely vivid in hand (if you haven't gotten yours yet). I set the camera phone's ISO and shutter speed really low to keep the richness, then pushed the brightness back up and dialed down highlights in post, without having to mess with color saturation. For record, I uploaded an original unedited photo of the shoot to flickr below. Its really too bad that couldn't have match Resolute's skin tone, having matched the pant pantone so well... 2020-11-14_11-04-16 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr And head is on my Roadblock of my T13 collection, where I always wanted a younger looking version of him for that canon GI Joe T13 2020-10-10_11-07-09 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

So preoccupied with work (in and out of town) and the Wal-Mart Retro Collection this last few weeks. I've got maybe 3 to 5 1984 Joes to get to yet, one for 1986, then finally will jump to 1987 unless some solid 1985 redoes come to mind along the way.
I'm not as upset with Retro Wave 3 as I should be. Probably because Wave 2 stung me so bad. Also, I feel I can totally skip Wave 3, not seeing any parts that are useful to any of my versions. I'd only rebuild Lady Jaye, but only if head is flesh color molded (not likely if they use the same parts tree as 50th)--also its very likely LJ will be short-packed and extremely difficult to find anyway. Anyway, below is what I was expecting or hoping for with some of these new offerings. I'm cool with Destro and Baroness as released with tweaks I can do myself. Storm Shadow should have been the Retaliation Ultimate release--many of us should already have spares of POC/50th/Retro version. Maybe another shot at characters below in 2022 for the 40th Anniversary? I'd like the extra parts to build more or improve on some tweaks, and wouldn't have minded having the swapped parts I used molded the correct color or factory painted... 2020-11-21_07-43-18 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Yeah, I wish we got real Ultimate / 50th versions in this retro collection instead of just fodder parts. I’ll hopefully get my Wave 2 order because Roadblock & Scarlett are the two I’m hoping to keep as is.
Fantastic group shot, I would have high-fived Hasbro if that was the group we got released to retail. They are perfect!

I need to "flip a coin" to decide if that is Duke.
