HHFF,
It's funny you would mention that older fans don't care for the ARAH Ace and then also mention that you don't like the 25th version. While I agree that the ARAH version looks more like an astronaut than a jet pilot, I actually prefer that ARAH helmet design than the 25th "fish bowl." I always thought it was peculiar that the Sunbow cartoon basically kept the rippled-looking suit, but changed out Ace's helmet to look more like a jet pilot. Anyway, your custom is amazing as usual. I really like how you used those HEAT Viper lower arms. They look like a perfect homage to the ARAH version. Plus, they do add the appropriate length to the arms. Great work. Jason |

Awesome Ace figure! He still kind of looks like an astronaut though. But a really nice representation of the original.

Thanks for all the comments. Because for many days I thought working on this one was a huge waste of time.

HHFF,
It's funny you would mention that older fans don't care for the ARAH Ace and then also mention that you don't like the 25th version. Jason For my display, standing next to Airborne and Wild Bill, Ace needed to stay classically inspired and 25th style as much as possible for the overall look and color. I just really hated the arms and mid torso, and overall proportions of the body. The original 25th figure was not going back on my shelf without fixes. I also wish the fishbowl helmet could have been better sculpted. I googled images of SR-71 and U-2 pilot helmets, and they look pretty neat (albeit retro), if detailed correctly--maybe even a working faceshield. They also could have stayed truer to the vintage style, which as you point out looks pretty neat if proportioned and detailed at least to that 83 level. For display, we won't have the helmet on, but wanted to make sure it was still functional. I think I got lucky on those arms. I bought an extra HEAT Viper as fodder last year without purpose. Maybe I was going to use him as BBQ. Maybe I still can, but he'll have trouble eating his patty melts at this time. |

COVER GIRL (25th Classic Style)
20200801_011233 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr PARTS: • Torso, arms, legs: 2009 ROC Scarlett (v12) • Feet: 2015 50th Cobra Officer female • Belt: 2011 POC General Hawk • Jacket: 2010 Marvel Universe Comic 2-Pack (modded) • Head: 2018 Marvel v Capcom Infinite Black Widow (modded) PAINTS: • Hair: AK Real Colors Earth Red • Jacket/Boots: Testors Schokoladenbraun • Pants: Testors Dark Tan • Shirt: Testors Armor Sand (for now, as of 8/20) • Belt/Boots: Testors Dark Green Continuing my current pass at the class of 1983 is Cover Girl, which completes my “back” row of 1983. This was started in 2010, as basically a filler spot in my 83-87 25th Shelf Collection, crudely done to blend in with a large shelf display. The body used is the same one used for the 2011 FSS version, but HissTank customizers were already using this build before the club release (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...custom-cc.html). The body construction hasn’t change since then, except for switching the feet. Before the feet switch she towered over my other female Joes. After the feet switch: still taller, but better. I considered using one the two Lady Jaye torso and legs for a shorter build, however this taller height works better with here taller adjacent 83 shelf mates (Ace, Airborne, Wild Bill), and is well proportioned (!) as a standalone. 2020-08-01_02-20-37 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The jacket was changed just before 2015. I originally started with an Indiana Jones or Star Wars ?? jacket, but Ceraurus’ 2013 30th version (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-ceraurus.html) instantly convinced me that the Storm vest worked much better for a streamlined look. I had to cut off the collar for the head(s) I was using at the time, which is currently lost right now (might be in one of my cut bits boxes somewhere). The vest does not fit the torso without heavy modding/cutting into the torso’s back sculpt. The vest was not easy to get a reasonable price for small custom fodder. Using the vest from Star Wars Jyn Erso per Axonrey’s Mass Device version (rhttp://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/478690-cover-girl-gallery-axonrey.html) might be a cheaper option for the short tight jacket, but I haven’t tried it on this torso. HHFF Cover Girl: 2010, 2015, 2020 PhotoGrid_1596294935845 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr With each iteration above, I’ve changed the shirt color. 2010 was Testors Tan (too orangy?), 2015 was Testors Sand (too light?), 2020 is Testors Armor Sand. This latest seems pretty vintage accurate, but that’s based on web photo review—I don’t have the original. For the belt, this iteration I finally got it painted green to match the vintage. The gun holster I decided to keep brown instead of grey to cut out that color from the figure palette (too many going on with the two-tone pants and shirt). The first head I used in 2010 was the 2009 POC Helix head which seemed to be the best option for semi-long hair and a head different from Scarlett and Lady Jaye, but I was never quite satisfied with its weird face sculpt and hair mold. The second head used in 2015 was the 2011 Marvel Universe Invisible Woman, inspired by the incredible custom by galactron22 (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...wolverine.html). I had problems getting to sit right and at the right neck height. I also messed up the hair cut in trying to get it shorter, and never got around to paint matching the flesh. But I let my 2015 build stand for years up until now (similar to a lot my Joes outside of the O13, T13, and Cobras). 20200802_182025 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr [Note: above pic done for height comparison, in relation to Cover Girl, as well as potential builds for upcoming Retro Scarlett to be discussed on my O13 thread] The current head is inspired by Axonrey’s 2019 Wolf Squad Expansion build (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...m-axonrey.html). It looked like an improvement over my botch 2015 head, and I found the two-pack on clearance in the last year (Target or GameStop). This head was much easier to set than the previous two (set with hot glue), and the hair need only a little modding to work with the neck and jacket. The lock of hair over her left eye was a bit distracting for me so I cut it off (could use some future cleanup there, judging from my closeup shot). And luckily Hasbro painted this partially covered left eye. I also got a Marvel Shanna figure on clearance for potential Cover Girl use, but that was a mess all around—unpainted left eye, hard long hair mold that didn’t fit the figure without having a giraffe neck, etc. The Marvel v Capcom head on this figure is still pretty new to me on this figure. I definitely like it over my previous choices and tries, but Oreobuilder’s, Axonrey's, and Stronox’s use of the MTF head has convinced me to at least try it out. The Capcom head makes for a sleek-styled build (why I chose to go ahead and post this version now), but the MTF looks closer in spirit to the vintage classic (a critical checkbox for me). I need to get that head sculpt in hand (which might be a while?), as I see it could use some eye and cheek work to make it my hands down final head. 2020-08-02_02-48-40 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20200802_000533 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr HOW YOU LIKE THAT With my tweaked figures, I generally like to get one little new and original difference from the previous customs that have inspired mine other than paint app—to add something new for the next customizer. With my Cover Girl, I can’t really say I’ve added anything new (other than the shorter feet)—I’ve just taken different bits that I like from previous great CG customs from this site. So thanks to all who have shared their great ideas with us. 2020-08-02_02-40-00 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 83 BACK ROW UP Up in the next week, I’m going to be revisiting Duke and Roadblock a bit. All the buzz with Wal-Mart’s forthcoming (but unseen as of yet) Retro Wave 2, and the speculation of the anticipated//desired builds got me thinking about these guys again (pros vs cons of different build ideas). Then we’ll jump back for some 1983, then a little 1986 update, and then maybe get to 1987 (and the Falcon and Tunnel Rat figures previewed at the beginning of the year).
