Some more photos of Roadblock. No real change to my original, except that I got a permanent fix on the webgear, by cutting off the back straps and replacing them with Snake Eyes OG13 harness back straps (which can't be seen in the photos.
Below taken last weekend, but sat on them until I was sure I liked this processing: GiJoe_25th_84-00_Roadblock_2019-1013ac1 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr And below, original photo to mid processing to final: GiJoe_25th_84-00_Roadblock_2019-1013ad by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Finally, done this weekend, homage to Michael Golden's pinup from Yearbook 2 with 50th Anniversary figures: 2019-10-26_10-05-12 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The Roadblock figure is huge. The worm's eye angle magnifies the issue, but was really the best way to go with the shot. Also went with different hue processing for a slightly different style. 2019-10-26_10-05-25 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Jason |

Inspiring photography and customs as always. Good choice to lower the machine gun a bit since the camera couldn’t match the foreshortening of the barrel in the comic illustration.

Thanks for the linked picture Jason, which is indeed the homage source. Trying to recreate Michael Golden classic shots with figures is incredibly tough. He style is a weird perfect blend of technical precision and a slick stylized almost cartoonish look that hard to get with poseable but static 3D figures. Quote:
Getting a nice imposing feel for Roadblock as well as a nice 3D perspective on his M2 had the downside of shrinking the heights of Flint and Lady J. The fact that the Roadblock figure is much taller than the other 2 didn't help, but with this shot, Flint and Lady probably look only half his height--very much different from the original source pinup. I had tried a different angle to get them more height aligned, but it looked too vanilla. In the end at some point I stopped looking at the original pinup for matching, and developed to final based on what I was getting from the camera. Last thing--working on this Yearbook 2 photo homage made me realize my Flint and maybe Lady Jaye could use some HHFF fixing/tweaking. I've been working on Flint this weekend, as well as some others for the shelf... |

Lady Jaye: 1. I'm not sure who the original card art is based off of, but she definitely has that Pat Benatar look going for her. 2. The original power javelin gun-thing has a weird design. Surely that big spur on the end doesn't fire out of the gun. The 25th version sort of corrects this. 3. Characters like Duke, Lady Jaye, Flint, & Shipwreck all have that "SW Holiday Special Boba Fett" appeal to me because they were introduced in the cartoons before being available as action figures. 4. My recommendation for your Wave 2 Lady Jaye would be to stick to the 50th legs. Although the 25th legs have the correct pockets, boot sheath, and boot holster, IMHO they are too tight and lack the detailing of the 50th (Shocktrooper) legs. Just a thought. Flint: 1. Again, as with Duke, Lady Jaye, etc., Flint has that appeal to me for being introduced in the cartoons first before his action figure was available. That and the fact that he's introduced as being second in command. Duke always seemed to get caught by Cobra and be in trouble. Flint was more of the take-charge, BA leader. 2. I think the DOTD Flint is about the best modern representation of ARAH Flint to date. However, the skin tone suffered from a bit of jaundice. Looks like you've already taken care of that. 3.Can't wait to see the subtle changes you've made to Flint. I can already see you've swapped out the arms and painted over the brown parts with a lighter shade. Did you remove the knife sheath from the web gear? Hard to tell with Flint at an angle. Jason

If you want legs that are slimmer than the 50th Lady Jaye legs, the ones from the 25th five pack are nice. The legs that were used on the ROC trench coat Snake Eyes or the ones from ROC Shipwreck look good on female figures as well.

Thanks for the early feedback. I may play with these ideas for LJ in the next few weeks.
Thanks Yeet. Just keep the forum going until I can finish the fixing and photographering... Quote:
The ROC Snake Eyes legs seem permanently bent at the knees (won't straighten out fully) which drives me nuts. The Shock Viper legs of the 50th LJ have a similar issue, but is easier to fix on those legs. Now the ROC Shipwreck legs: that is a great idea. I was recently browsing a lot of these ROC figures, and lamenting the skinniness of many of the male legs. I still like the legs I am using--mostly b/c of the molded stuff tied to her boots--but if anyone is looking for an alternative for legs, ROC legs are the way to go per DerStahlhelm's suggestion. I've been going back and forth between keeping the 50th LJ legs and switching to the original 25th LJ legs as pictured. I really like the new thinking in legs based on the concept vault protos. But in the end, those legs are just too bulky and poofy--especially when standing next to this Flint. The other issue was that the legs were too short, and the combo of short and bulky made me decide to switch legs. But just in case, I have those 50th bulky LJ legs repainted to match this figure, in case I change my mind later. Also, if the pose of the legs makes them look weird, it's b/c the leg2hip joints were too loose at the time, and I couldn't get the exact legs posed as I wanted. She was barely staying upright thanks to the foot magnet, but was twisting all over the place. I'm not crazy about her back collar. Might have to try something for that... |

Oh man! I cannot wait to see what you have in store with Wave 2. Since you've posted the teaser picture of everyone's favorite G.I. Joe "power couple" (come on, you know you love "Lady Flaye" better than "Scar-Eyes"), I want to offer a few observations/comments.
Jason LJ 1. Pat Benatar was hot, and had the voice! I am old... 2. Anyone notice that a) there was one female figure each year between 1982 and 1987--the year that I stopped [coincidence?], b) each female except Baroness had a main weapon that was not a rifle--but I guess Baroness's huge rifle balanced that all out? Anyway, reminds me that my needs a supplement rifle [I'd swapped out the javelin, but that would upset too many diehards in my mind] 3. I don't know if the SW HS Boba Fett thing was a good thing back then, particularly for the Sunbow cartoons when I watched them in their 1st airings. Each time, I'd get excited about the new mini first showing the latest wave of Joes, but then the cartoon's would be dominated by these main characters who didn't have figures (at least not at the time, and no telling if they were going to be made). For each of the 1st two mini's, I was like WTF right in the 1st minute... 4. See previous response. Just my preference on the legs. I will get a Lady Jaye multiverse family portrait to help compare/contrast all the leg options (similar to previous for Duke and GungHo) next year. Often these pictures help set the direction I go but in this case, side-by-sides w/o photos weren't necessary. Flint: 1. Duke getting captured in the 2nd mini was just a plot device, so that the new characters could shine. The whole Duke+Snake Eyes B-story was pretty weak, compared to their ones for the 1st mini (which were also much shorter in length). Now I'm not slighting Flint over Duke--but the toons had them both shaft the main boss man Hawk (who would finally get his day for the 3rd mini). 2. Agreed with the DOTD, but 25th was just a mess that could not be fixed. At least the DOTD version was correctable. 3. Bunch of subtle changes as you've noticed--and right on about the webgear knife holster. The arm swap, I give credit to Pugsley. I'm not going to lie: these two aren't really on the top of my personal favorites--mostly because they were replacements in many ways to original Joes. But these two were so visually well designed back in the day, and inarguably have iconic status due the the cartoon season 1, and being flagship characters of the mighty 1985 releases. I'm starting off with these two, mostly because of issues I saw when posing and photographing them with Roadblock weeks back, where the figures issues I always sought to fix were really brought to light. |
