I hear ya about the side buckles, but honestly, they are the bane of my existence. The 86 vests don’t close with the T-shirt torsos, the web harnesses don’t close around the waists, the shoulder rig peg-holes fall right into the figure’s armpits, the plate vest’s pegs are always too big for the holes. For a time, I was gluing buckles shut, but I stopped doing that. I need to get back to doing that. The only vests that don’t raise my blood pressure are the armor vests.
Also, that sand-colored paint scraped off at the SLIGHTEST touch. I was literally scraping the paint off WITH THE BRUSH of paint! I said the heck with it and just let the buckles do what they wanted. LOL! Ok! I totally get what your saying with the futzing of the latches/pegs! It can be a real pain sometimes! |

So, tonight I just want to pull out my old Joe customizing yearbook and post some filler while I’m wrapping my head around upcoming builds for a couple Mega Marines. I know that none of the original Mega Marines except Gung-Ho were actually Marines (okay, arguably Blast-Off COULD have been a Marine. Maybe). I’m thinking about doing a Mega Marines Hollow Point and maybe a Mega Marines Mainframe. I’m still mulling all that over. So while all that is brewing, I figured I’d pull out some very early pieces that I don’t consider up-to-snuff anymore. Two vehicles. One figure.
I do not do vehicles as a rule. These next two vehicles are the reason why. They were not fun to do and the finished product does not meet my admittedly middling standards. In each case, there are only a couple details that I still find interesting. Keep in mind that these were completed back in 2012. Back then my design aesthetics were much different than they are now. First is the Ninja Combat Cruiser. I like the clay-caked wheels. I also like the barbed wire around the grille and the bolt cutters on the fender. The barrel placement was to make it look like it was welded there a la A-Team or Mad Max. I certainly would not write FURY on the barrel if I had the choice today. That was done simply to copy Tonka’s Steel Monsters trucks. DESERT STYLE NINJA COMBAT CRUISER Next up is the Ninja Commando 4X4. I like this one better than the Combat Cruiser custom. Again, I like the clay-caked wheels. I also like the sand-caked seat cushions, the backpack on the hood, and the crate on the passenger running-board. The rest is so-so. I didn’t picture the 4X4 with its top mounted gun because…well, honestly I couldn’t find it. Anyway, I didn’t customize it so it’s still the factory spring loaded missile/harpoon launcher. You aren’t missing anything. DESERT STYLE NINJA COMMANDO 4X4 Lastly we have Talking Battle Commanders General Hawk. It?s a kitbash. I stole the legs and waist from my Dusty V1 custom. That is why Hawk has light colored boots. I am going to give the legs back to Dusty. What I really wanted to show off on this custom is the modified Japanese Officer?s belt with attached grenades. The belt, garrison cap and Agency head are all keepers. The rest would have to be updated if I were to keep him on my shelf. The last picture is just a bit of making fun of how big the Talking Battle Commander backpacks were. I took a SHARC and stuck it behind Hawk as a joke. I guess he could be a Mega-Ultra T.B. Those vehicles are filthy! lol! Combat Cruiser is cool & does have that road warrior feel... & I actually like that dune buggy quite a bit! But don't know if it's better than that Hawk with the appropriately sized sonic SHARC backpack!

The vehicles came out looking really cool, I still haven’t messed with any vehicles customs myself yet (other than a custom sticker sheet) even though it’s on the list.
Really cool build for Talking Hawk. Absolutely loved that figure growing up, even more so when I figured out how to get that backpack off! Haha. Got so tired of him only riding in the Mobat so I loved it when my brother figured out how to rid him of that backpack! He’s one that I still need to make, love the webgear rig that you put together, really gives him that Hawk look, then the head / hat combo is perfect!

The kids are home today due to Hurricane Ian possibly coming through, so while they are screaming at each other trying to play Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy, I get to paint a bit.
Trying to finish the 1983 lineup. Got another one done (I say done, but there will always be tweaks). Oh, please ignore the bit of piping on the vest that doesn’t go anywhere…it was an experiment that failed and I had to salvage what I could. ACE (V1): 1983

That's very striking. Doesn't even look custom painted. Factory fresh, even. Nice job

Thanks Ax, very nice of you to say. I do try hard to disguise my crap skills.
Got some extra time on my hands today obviously, so I pulled out an extra pair of gloved hands from the Eagle Force Bulldog figure and gave them to Rock N Roll. I also decided to give RNR a T-shirt torso just to kinda beef him up a bit. ROCK N ROLL (V1): 1982 Then I thought, why not see what he would have looked like if he had joined Tiger Force. Lastly, I had an extra Trooper head. This one was the Geriatric Trooper head. I thought I would repurpose it either for Victor Sullivan or good ol Cesspool (WIP). Decided to go with Cesspool. I figured there?s no reason Cesspool couldn?t have a mustache.
